Recent tour of LEC quite instructive

You have viewed 1 of 10 this month.

Want uninterrupted access to on your computer, smartphone and tablet?

We have many subscription options to fit your needs.

To the Editor: A part of the monthly programming at the Riley County Seniors’ Service Center includes a tour of a local public or private business or organization. On Feb. 15, 21 Seniors’ Center members toured the Riley County Law Enforcement Center (LEC). We want to thank the LEC staff for the opportunity to tour the facility.
Sgt. Greinke was gracious in working to identify a date and time that worked with the Seniors’ Center’s schedule and welcomed us when we arrived. He then turned the tour over to corrections officer Deehr, who had planned the presentation and tour.
Officer Deehr’s presentation was quite thorough. It included all the different types of clothing an inmate might wear and the dinnerware used to serve meals, a sample of freshly made “bread loaf” and examples of “booking” paperwork.
We also got to lie down on a fully made bed and view the various types of bedding used to address safety. There were different types of restraints for us to view as well as different types of safety gear. Center members were particularly taken with the Taser demonstration and were interested in learning about the training corrections officers receive.
Sgt. Greinke and corrections officer Deehr never hurried us through the tour and took their time answering every question.
As is typical when we return from a tour, members chatted about what they liked (or didn’t like) about the experience. To a person, everyone was complimentary. The experience left them feeling confident that the staff of the Riley County Police Department is a group of dedicated professionals who continually and visibly strive to “reduce crime and improve the quality of life” for the citizens of Riley County.
Residents who haven’t tour the LEC should make arrangements to do so. We’re confident they will walk away just as impressed as we were, and they will see, as we did, that our local law enforcement agency is top-notch.

The Feast it Forward plans a ‘new concept’ food and wine retail experience

It may not look like much right now, but Feast it Forward co-founder and president Katie Hamilton Shaffer says that when she opens the doors on the project she’s creating in a two-story farmhouse, visitors will discover a new concept of a multi-sensory retail experience.

A soft opening, planned for the end of April, will feature chefs Jacque Pépin and Rick Moonen.

Shaffer admits there is a lot yet to be done on the million-dollar plus project on McKinstry Street style across from the Oxbow Public Market. “We might be greeting people with our hardhats on,” she laughed, “but we’re still going to go for a late April opening.

“I am pumped and rejuvenated about being a part of what is happening in downtown Napa,” she said, “and I want to make it very clear this concept is very much for the local audience, not just for tourists.”

So, exactly what is Feast it Forward? Actually, it’s a lot of things at once.

For the past few years, Feast it Forward has been a lifestyle brand with an online network of primarily food shows produced at the company’s downtown studios. Its custom-built Ultimate Airstream “Sophia” has turned at local pop-up events and festivals like BottleRock.

Through the organization’s charitable arm, Feast it Forward Foundation last year donated $20,000 to worthy causes locally and around the world in five categories: women, children, animals, health and international.

Shaffer hopes that the total money going to the Foundation will grow exponentially as 5 percent of the proceeds for items sold in the new store will be donated.

“I’d like to see our foundation grow to the point where people are sending us grant requests along the lines of ‘Newman’s Own’ products,” she explained.

And the store? Shaffer has lined up an array of local wineries and notable brands to come together in one place for what she calls “our flagship experiential estate.”

“Everything you touch and feel the moment you walk in is basically our lifestyle and it’s all for sale,” she explained. “From the décor, to the furniture, to the cabinets, to the countertops, to the lighting, food and wine products and accessories, it’s all products that are co-branded with sponsors.

“We call them our ‘products with purpose,” she said. These include spices, oils, candles and home goods, including Stölzle glassware from the European designer of lead-free crystal.

“Soon we’ll be adding additional kitchen accessories, cookware, apparel and more. And we’ll be changing out the offerings regularly,” Shaffer said.

“We’re signing on major brands and talent. Chef Rick Moonen is our chef advocate and brings his reputation as the godfather of sustainable food, particularly seafood.” Moonen has also been an executive chef at several of the top restaurants in New York City.

Renowned French chef Jacques Pépin joined the Feast it Forward team after 35 years hosting several popular cooking shows on PBS. For local flavor, Ken Frank, owner and executive chef of Napa’s La Toque Restaurant, will also be taking part.

Other sponsors include Gibson Guitars and GE Monogram “for high-end appliances,” said Shaffer. GE will have a partial kitchen on the ground floor and a full-blown kitchen upstairs for cooking demonstrations, which will also be filmed for online content.

Shaffer said Sonoma’s B Wise Vineyards, the main official wine sponsor, will have a lounge partnered with a studio expressing graffiti style art. Fifteen other local wineries will be represented and a limited food menu of items from the Oxbow Public Market will also be available. For coffee enthusiasts there will also be an espresso bar.

Kollar Chocolates, the artisan chocolatier in Yountville will have a presence that’s tied to a paint sponsor where the chocolates and the décor will change regularly.

California Home + Design is the main media design sponsor with it’s “Get the Look” display, a Microsoft interactive service hub wall for sharing and developing ideas.

Shaffer said one of their newest partners is TCL (The Creative Life), a consumer electronics brand. “They will be creating a media wall with huge 65” screens that carry our programs, our tweets, and everything that may be going on upstairs in our studio,” she said.

“Bright Event Rentals doesn’t have a Napa showroom so they are tricking out an area for wedding planners and brides with all the latest stuff,” Shaffer said. “Out back there will be large tables for wedding planners or soon-to-be brides to visit and learn more.”

Also outside will be a fire pit surrounded by heated furniture from California’s Galantar Jones, the inventors of outdoor heated furniture. Shaffer said she is also going to be working with Cambria, a family-owned producer of natural quartz surfaces.

The new space, she said, “is not just a tasting room. Or a showroom. It’s a space for like-minded brands to be under one roof in the hope that they will generate interest as they work together to aid our lifestyle experience and causes we support.”
