Also this month, Macy’s Fashion Pass benefits the Y’s summer camp

I.N.C + Popsicle®

I.N.C International Concepts has partnered with The Original Brand
Popsicle® for a limited-edition capsule, sold exclusively at
Macy’s. The bright and bold collection features playful prints inspired

Summer calls for beach-side and pool-side shindigs, and Macy’s has
everything you need to look fabulous. Rainbow-hued two-piece bathing
suits and electric macramé one-pieces set the color setting to high for
fun-in-the-sun adventures. Chic cover-ups with exuberant prints,
tassels, and lace and cut-out details are statement-making staples that
perfectly transition from day to night. Novelty tees with cheeky bon
mots and cool patches layer perfectly with denim cut-offs and
fray-hemmed jeans for when the sun sets. Finish off your festive looks
with pompom-bedecked wicker purses and rhinestone-encrusted slides for
an easy, breezy, yet funky take on summer style.

The pool float and novelty beach towel are must-haves for summer 2017,
complete with fruit motifs and colorful graphics. Martha Stewart
Collection and Lacoste feature plush beach towels with playful patterns
such as pineapples, flamingos, ice cream cones, stripes and bold
geometric designs.

Road Trip Fashion

Concerts, festivals, diners, bazaars—all stops along a great summer road
trip. For those seasonal jaunts, Macy’s has all the looks to keep you
comfortable, yet trendy throughout. Denim and tees are huge for the road
tripper this summer, but with a twist. Updates to the Americana motif
combine with patchwork and ripped-and-repaired denim to achieve an
aesthetic perfect for the road.

CR by Cynthia Rowley

Macy’s has partnered with designer Cynthia Rowley for a limited-edition
line, CR by Cynthia Rowley. The high-spirited collection taps into the
cheerful and vivacious essence at the core of the celebrated designer’s
eponymous brand. The limited-time collection is a celebration of summer

essential for feeding a crowd, whether large or small.

To host a summer evening soirée in style, Thirstystone at Macy’s offers

copper detailing, acacia wood and marble coasters, and wood serving
boards with chevron patterns.

“Macy’s Celebrate Summer campaign features all the must-haves for the

Millie and Pepper, a Modern General Store, Opens in Traverse City

Carrying everything from home décor and kitchen accessories to local art and sustainable fashion, Millie and Pepper is a modern take on a general store. Find the shop at 120 S. Union Street, Traverse City.

Peek inside! Scroll for pictures and an interview with shop owner Julia Hearne.

Tell me about your name, Millie and Pepper, and your idea for a modern general store.

Millie and Pepper are dog names. Pepper is my dog and Millie is his friend. Millie’s owner, Amanda Klepper of The Filling Station, has also been a great help in helping me flesh out ideas and get up and running. The old general store was a place that carried a broad selection of merchandise, where people would come to purchase all their general goods. Our modernized version is still the same with our products being a broad selection of beautifully designed, well-made clothes, kitchen and home goods, chocolate, coffee, and more.

Sounds like you’ll be carrying a wide variety of products. What brands are you carrying?

We are carrying Amour Vert for women’s clothing. It means green love in French but is an American-made brand that believes that great fashion and social responsibility can coexist. I love watching people touch the fabric and gasp about how soft it feels. For men’s fashion, I am carrying Faherty, “clothes made from premium materials with a focus on unwavering craftsmanship.” I am also carrying a line of clothes my family makes. Maus Hoffman is a men’s clothing store that my grandfather started in Petoskey in 1940. It is still in our family, though all the stores are now in south Florida. I will be carrying their Solemar label at Millie and Pepper.

Michigan brands?

A couple of our local Michigan companies are Higher Grounds Trading Co.Loon Hardwoods from Dorr, Michigan, which makes wonderful wood cheese boards, bread knives, cheese knives and cutting boards; and Detroit Grooming for men, We are proud too of our local artists and artisans, such as painter Duncan Spratt Moran and Windsor chair maker/instructor, David Abeel. We also have paintings coming from a nationally-renowned artist from Santa Fe (who spends time in Charlevoix), Noah Desmond, who is also a relative.

We have an amazing selection of craft chocolates that my husband, Matt Desmond, has researched and collected from around the country. They complement the delicious coffee selection that he also has put together.

Tell me about your connection to TC and why you wanted to open a shop here.

I grew up in south Florida but my family was originally from Northern Michigan. In fact, my great grandparents owned a significant auto part business in the building that now houses North Peak Brewing Company. My husband and I have a familiar story to many people. We were living on the west coast and started a family. We wanted to be closer to our family in Michigan and found that Traverse City was a great place to live and raise a family.

What can visitors expect when they stop in?

We want to create a curated experience for visitors in which they can browse casually and then stop to learn more about any item that catches their fancy for any reason. With items from swim trunks made out of recycled pop bottles to growler carriers to sleek coffee brewing products, we hope every customer leaves the store feeling like they had an enriching experience whether or not they made a purchase.

Some advice for cleaning up kitchens after flood

Floodwater can bring silt, raw sewage, oil, and chemical wastes into your home.

If these compounds come in contact with food, it makes the food unsafe to eat. Wash and sanitize metal, glass, or ceramic pots, pans, dishes, and utensils in contact with flood water.

To wash kitchen items follow these tips. Remove detachable parts, such as blades, plastic or wooden handles, and screens. Wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils and detached parts in hot, soapy water. Water for washing and sanitizing must be certified safe to use. Use a stiff brush to get into all corners. Rinse items in non-contaminated, clear, hot water.

To sanitize the same kitchen items do the following. Make a sanitizing solution by mixing 1 tablespoon of unscented chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of warm (not hot) water. Hot water causes bleach to dissipate, making it less effective.

Completely immerse all cleaned pots, pans, dishes, glassware, and utensils in the sanitizing solution for 10-15 minutes. Remove all pieces and let them air dry in a clean and sanitized dish rack. Using a dishtowel could re-contaminate the dishes. Boiling cookware can also be used as an alternative sanitizing step. Empty and clean and sanitize the sink after washing each sinkful of dishes and utensils.

Discard the following dishes, pots, pan, and utensils: bowls, cups, cutting boards, and any utensil or container made of porous material that can absorb water, such as wood; dishes and serving dishes with any cracks, chips, or scoring can be salvaged if they will only be used for decorative purposes. Thoroughly wash countertops with soap and water, using hot water if available. Rinse and then sanitize them by applying a solution of 1 tablespoon of unscented, liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of drinking water or the cleanest, clearest water available. Allow to air-dry.

For iron pots, pans, and utensils, wash with soap and water, using a stiff brush, scouring powder, or steel wool. If rust remains, wipe items with an oil-saturated cloth or a commercial rust remover. If using a commercial rust remover, be sure to follow the label instructions. Wash again in hot, soapy water, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Season iron pans and utensils with a generous amount of unsalted cooking oil. Heat in a 250-degree oven for two or three hours. This will permit oil to soak into the pores of the metal. During the heating process, apply more oil as needed. When seasoning is completed, wipe off the excess oil.

For stainless steel, nickel-copper alloy, nickel, or chrome-plated metals, wash thoroughly and polish with a fine-powdered cleanser. If hardware is broken so that base metal is exposed and rusted, wipe with kerosene. Then wash and dry the surface. Wax after each use to prevent further rusting.

For copper and brass items, polish with a copper or brass polish or rub with a cloth saturated with vinegar or rub with a piece of salted lemon. Always wash copper thoroughly with soapy water after using acids or commercial polishes or they will re-tarnish rapidly. Wash lacquered ornamental copper in warm soapy water. Rinse with warm water and wipe dry. Do not polish. Do not soak. Do not use copper and brass items for food preparation or service.

For aluminum pans and utensils, wash thoroughly with hot soapy water. Scour any unpolished surfaces, such as the insides of pans, with soapy steel wool pads. However, do not scour plated aluminum surfaces because it might remove the finish.

Sanitize in a bleach solution: 1 tablespoon unscented chlorine bleach per gallon of warm, not hot, water). To remove dark stains from aluminum pans, fill pan with water. Add 1 tablespoon vinegar or 2 teaspoons cream of tartar for each quart of water. Boil for 10 to 15 minutes, scour with steel wool, wash with soap, rinse, and dry.

Joule: Sous Vide by ChefSteps

For the Iron Chef on your shopping list, the Joule: Sous Vide combines technology with home cooking to create five-star dishes. The smart kitchen appliance is extremely versatile and can be used to prepare everything from flaky halibut to decadent creme brulee. Using the Joule app for iOS or Android, simply select the desired cooking temperature and time (Joule offers users a variety of recipes, but a quick search can yield dozens more), seal the ingredients in a bag (a Ziploc will work, but a FoodSaver makes the process incredibly easy), and let the Joule keep the water bath at the perfect temp during the entire cooking process. Retailing for $199.00, this slim device, which can be stored in a drawer, has become one of my favorite kitchen appliances thanks to the magnetic base and fast heating capability. So far, I haven’t had any connection issues with the device using my iPhone 6s Plus, so the lack of a physical display on the unit hasn’t been a problem.

IQ Smart Wireless Nutrition Scale by KitchenIQ

To keep Mom healthy, the KitchenIQ Wireless Nutriscale offers an abundance of features for under $60. Capable of weighing ingredients up to 11 pounds, the IQ Smart Wireless Nutrition Scale can be used with the corresponding KitchenIQ Food App (compatible with iOS 7.0 or later) to count calories, carbs, sodium and more. It’s also great for weighing ingredients when baking to ensure accuracy.

Sensoria Fitness running gear with iOS app

For the fitness fan on your shopping list, Sensoria’s fitness socks and anklet, which retail for $199, offer advanced features, such as coaching advice and cadence detection. Paired with Senoria’s heart rate monitoring garments, the running system can alert users when it detects a heart rate in the danger zone. The app can also measure distance and speed with the option to unlock paid training programs (From Couch to 5K is coming soon, for example). Owners can also share data with Apple’s Health app to track progress and overall trends. After using the system, I found it to be motivating and an asset to my fitness regimen.

iPhone 7 (PRODUCT)RED

Looking for the ultimate gift for Mom this year? Apple’s Special Edition iPhone 7 (PRODUCT)RED is sure to please —not only is the red striking visually, but a portion of every (RED) purchase goes to the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS. Top Rated Plus eBay sellers have the devices for $20 to $30 off MSRP.

Additional Apple Deals

AppleInsider and Apple authorized resellers are also running a handful of additional exclusive promotions this month on Apple hardware that will not only deliver the lowest prices on many of the items, but also throw in discounts on AppleCare, software and accessories. These deals are as follows:
