MGM Resorts HCC Center for Culinary Arts in Holyoke lands $229K grant from state

HOLYOKE — The state has granted the Holyoke Community College MGM Culinary Arts Institute, now in its final stages of construction at the Cubit Building downtown, $229,500.

The center is due to open in November.

Gov. Charlie Baker announced the funding this week as part of a total of $9.5 million in Workforce Skills Capital Grants given to 32 community colleges, high schools and educational institutions around the state. He made the announcement at Nashoba Valley Technical High School in Westford.

In Holyoke, HCC will use the money to buy 32 computer workstations, networking infrastructure, and software programs unique to hospitality and culinary industry workplaces, according to a press release. Money will also be used to buy kitchen equipment such as refrigerators, grills and fry tables, ice machines, skillets, griddles, steamers, and dishwashers.

“All the items purchased with the grant will directly support workforce training for occupations within the growing hospitality and culinary arts industry of western Massachusetts, including preparing workers for MGM Springfield, one of our major employer partners,” said Amy Dopp, interim vice president of Institutional Advancement in a prepared statement.

Dopp said the new equipment will allow the college to increase the number of seats available in its credit and non-credit programs and be able to customize instruction to meet the needs of local employers.

The 20,000 square-foot center will occupy the first and second floors of the Cubit Building. HCC’s credit programs in Hospitality and Culinary Arts will relocate from the main campus to the new facility for the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester.

MGM Springfield, which needs 750 to 900 trained hospitality service staff for its casino resort scheduled to open in Springfield’s South End in Sept. 2018, is looking to Holyoke Community College’s new Culinary Arts Center in the Cubit building as a source of future employees.

Aldi launches Christmas 2017 toy range – and it includes a wooden rocking unicorn

Aldi has unveiled a new range of wooden toys in the run-up to Christmas.

The retailer describes it as a ‘nostalgic collection of great-value wooden toys’ and the range includes everything from a classic dolls house to a theatre.

It has also tapped into the unicorn craze by introducing a trendy wooden rocking unicorn, priced £27.99 and billed as ‘a modern twist on the original’.

Suitable for ages two and over it comes with its own sound effects by squeezing the ear.

Prices start from £9.99 for kitchen sets and accessories, up to £79.99 for the premium wooden kitchen.

The playshop and theatre (£34.99), offers two great role plays in one.

On one side, the play shop features two shelves with storage trays to show off produce, including a starter set of three fruits and three vegetables.

Wannabe grocers can use the mini blackboard to showcase their prices and promotions.
