Google Home Mini review: It doesn’t outdo the Dot

The Google Home Mini is the gateway drug Google desperately needed to compete with Amazon’s Echo lineup. If you already have a Google Home, adding a Mini to another room is a no-brainer. If you’ve yet to decide which smart-home ecosystem to buy into, your decision will be more complicated.

Like the Echo Dot, a Google Home Mini can do everything its larger sibling can do. The bulk of the processing power it needs is in the cloud, so very little is needed in the device itself. The biggest difference lies in the speaker; and on that score, the Mini sucks just as badly as an Echo Dot. But I can’t imagine anyone relying on a Mini for music reproduction any more than I can a Dot.

The Google Home Mini and the Echo Dot are essentially smart-home extension cords. They’re cheap enough that you can put one in every room, so you can tap the power of the cloud from anywhere. For me, that means being able to control my smart home with voice commands from just about every room, including my enclosed patio and the garage.

Using the Google Home Mini

I like the Google Home Mini, although I won’t be using one in my home on a regular basis for reasons I’ll explain in a minute. The Mini is more attractive than an Echo Dot (although the coral model I reviewed looks like jelly donut), and its volume and play-pause controls are completely camouflaged beneath its fabric cover. But I have to wonder what that fabric will look like after a year or two of hands touching it and dust settling on it. I suppose I could hit it with a vacuum now and again, but will it stand up to the occasional spray of stain remover?

google home mini mic mute Michael Brown / IDG

The Mini’s mic mute switch is much more awkward to use than the button on the back of the larger Google Home.

The Mini’s mic button, on the other hand, is a side-mounted slider that requires two hands to operate: one to hold the speaker and the other to manipulate the switch. The Echo Dot’s top-mounted push button, and the button on the back of the Google Home, are much easier to use. Google recently disabled the Mini’s ability to summon Google Assistant when you touch the top of it over privacy concerns: The Mini wouldn’t stop recording everything it heard and uploading it to Google’s servers. Whoops.

Four LEDs light up when you summon Google Assistant, but these are much less obvious indicators that you have the Mini’s attention compared to the LED ring around the Echo Dot. You might want to turn on the accessibility feature that causes the Mini to produce a sound when you summon it. The LEDs will also light up to represent volume levels when you tap either side.

Going back to the Mini’s music capabilities for a second: The Echo Dot might not sound any better, but it does have the ability to send its audio to external speakers, via Bluetooth or its analog auxiliary port. And several manufacturers have come out with speaker docks that you can attach to an Echo Dot—the Ninety7 Vaux being just one example—that deliver superior sound without changing the Dot’s footprint. The only way to improve the Mini’s sound is to pair with a Google Cast-enabled speaker.

I’ve had a Google Home since its early days, and have found it to be more sophisticated than the Echo. It’s better at understanding my requests, and it’s much more helpful when I’m seeking general information. But the Echo series is compatible with more devices, and it’s vastly superior at controlling my smart home system of choice. There’s also a raft of accessories available for it, ranging from the aforementioned speakers to batteries that render it completely portable, recessed mounts that let you install it in your ceiling, and even fabric sleeves to dress it up.

‘Chef Ben’ comes to Northwestern

WEST SALEM — And the survey says … vegetables can be palatable to elementary school students.

In a taste testing exercise, 65 percent of fourth-grade students at Northwestern Elementary School gave “sweet potato mash” a thumbs-up, while nearly 87 percent awarded stir-fried broccoli a positive review and said they would eat it again, as reported by Karen Potter, founder of A Whole Community, which raised the bar for the farm to school concept by bringing a chef to school for tips on taking advantage of a bountiful harvest.

“Chef Ben” — Ben Callender, Potter’s son — recently took over the kitchen at Northwestern Elementary School and stirred up fresh vegetables and an enthusiastic response from the food services staff, to whom Callender also gave a tip sheet about preparing the fresh produce provided to the Northwestern district in A Whole Community’s pilot program.

Callender, an executive chef at BRIO Tucsan Grille in Columbus, shared recipes and his own story about moving from eating highly processed food to healthier choices.

“It has really personally changed my life,” said Callender, citing one of the benefits as dramatic weight loss.

“It used to be that what your mother cooked is what you got,” he told Northwestern staff, but “now the ball is in your court” to offer students an opportunity for nutritional guidance. Good habits are catching on because of the enthusiasm of food service employees, according to Callender.

The vegetables of the day were broccoli, sweet potatoes and zucchini.

Callender provided tips on cooking them, such as not getting the oil too hot “or it will make everything you make taste bitter,” and fielded questions about seasoning, for example, blanching broccoli, asparagus, green beans and cauliflower and then roasting, sauteing, grilling or baking them with different seasonings.

Sweet potatoes are a “wonderful root vegetable to work with; you can roast them in the oven until they are tender, peel and mix with salt, cinnamon and a little butter for some delicious mashed potatoes.”

Blanched broccoli may be sauted “in a little oil and seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic powder;” and green beens may be “drizzled” with a small amount of balsamic vinegar and bacon, he said.

After heating some sliced zucchini, Callender suggested adding roasted carrots, broccoli and red peppers “for vibrant color.”

“We needed some inspiration,” said Wendi Mole, Northwestern food services, who previously said the department has been eagerly looking for recipes from their own file box, magazines and other sources to enhance cooking and serving vegetables in the school’s lunch program.

“It has been an inspiration for me to help the next generation especially have good nutrition,” Callender said.

Students asked for seconds and thirds of the broccoli, Potter said, and one student asked Callender, “How did you do this? It tastes so good.”

Another advantage of Callender’s visit was a gift to the school from A Whole Community of two 14″ skillets and a wire basket so that Northwestern’s cooks could “continue the cooking techniques demonstrated by Chef Ben,” Potter said.

A Whole Community and the Wayne County Health Department through the Maternal and Child Health Program sponsored the Chef to School event, she said, adding “Callender has done several cooking demos on Fox TV in Arizona and in Ohio.”

Reuse and repurpose design ideas

Growing up in a small town, I had big interests in finding ways to repurpose or reuse discarded items to transform them into something interesting and outside of their traditional purpose. I recall being really inspired by one of my siblings who reused draperies as the fabric to reupholster furniture in our home. One of my favorite transformations was when she used the shell of floor model television and repurposed it by making a curio display cabinet.

As an interior designer, I believe that design is about transformation. Design transformation does not only mean changing the form, shape or appearance of something, but it also means to change the feeling, purpose, and use of something. We now live in an era where being economically responsible is important. Making the decision to become more eco-friendly is now a driving factor for designers, developers, and architects. Designing your home does not have to break your bank in order to create an exciting and impressive look. You just may have everything that you need right in your home.

The concept of reuse and repurpose is a benefit in design in many ways. As a designer, my motivation for reuse and repurpose is to ultimately create a fresh new look for your space. Designers often use the concepts of reuse and repurpose for design not only to save costs on projects but also to reintroduce design elements that maintain the integrity and familiarity of the space. The purpose of reusing items is to develop a totally new use for the item outside of its intended or expected use. The same goes for repurposing items where items are reintroduced outside of their intended purpose. During the design planning stage, it is important that I consider elements which my clients have previously chosen. This helps to show off the owner’s authentic style in a new way. The best way to determine which elements to reintroduce to your space is to choose items which have great structure, interest, and/or texture. Let’s begin with some ideas on how to reuse items in your design projects. Items such as books, draperies, and glassware are examples of simple items that can be reused as a base to transform for more decorative uses. Here are a few tips to help you discover new uses for traditional design items.

Reuse Books

Reusing hardcover books as accessories is an easy and inexpensive way to add to your home’s décor. For a complete transformation, paint or re-cover the exterior of your books. This will add uniformity and present the books more like a collection. To create an even more elegant look, use metallic spray paint to cover the edges of the pages. This transformative look is a simple way to add additional pattern and pops of color to your shelves. Books can also help to bring additional visual height when used vertically and length when added horizontally. One other tip is to use books to help elevate smaller decorative items and to emphasize your prized collections.

Reuse Draperies

Adding draperies to a room will add personality and a sense of formality to a room depending on the texture, color, and print. They also can be a timeless addition to a room, but in many cases, draperies provide a perfect opportunity to update your room’s décor. My tip is not to quickly discard the drapes once you have selected another window treatment alternative. Draperies provide a large square footage of fabric with can be reused for other design projects. Reuse drapery fabric to create new pillow covers to transform seating or bedding. Heavier drapery fabrics can be used to reupholster dining chair seats. Drapery panels cut and sewn lengthwise can make a great custom table runner.

Reuse Glassware

Photo courtesy of Techno CrazedGlassware is also a great reusable item because it is found in so many varying shapes and sizes. The most reusable glassware items are the ones that can be used as vessels to hold or store other items. Clear glassware is flexible for any space because of its classic appearance and easy to blend capability. A great way to reuse barware glasses such as wine, cocktail, and beer is to add a votive or tea light candles to each and collage them to create a simmering centerpiece for your dining table. This can be done on large or small scale depending on how dramatic the display. Another tip to creating a total transformation of your glassware is to paint them in a metallic finish. Incorporating metallic finishes is the new design trend and glassware makes it simple, easy, and inexpensive to achieve. Consider also using metallic paint finishes on bottles and glass canisters with interesting shapes. This creates interesting vessels as accessories and floral arrangements.

Repurposing items in design is a great way to think outside the box and to break the rules of typical design aesthetics. Adding repurposed items to your home can add elements which make your home more interesting, unique, and eclectic. Two items I like to repurpose are furniture and flooring. Here are a few tips to help you find a new purpose for traditional design items.

Repurpose Furniture

Wood furniture is usually made to be durable and built to last; however, there are times when the look of the furniture becomes outdated and less appealing to your style. At that point, it is recognized that it is time for an update. Completely replacing the furniture becomes the big topic of discussion when planning the next phase of design rehabilitation, but replacements can sometimes be cost-prohibitive. Achieving an updated designer look does not have to blow your budget.

One way to repurpose your furniture is to consider using your furniture in a nontraditional way. For example, consider moving furniture that has adequate storage such as dressers, night stands, and cabinets into unexpected areas. Horizontal dressers make great television stands and add additional storage for DVDs, game consoles, and media equipment, while a vertical dresser creates secure storage for special occasion dinnerware, utensils, table linens, and collectible items. My tip for a total transformation is to repurpose lower kitchen cabinets to create a kitchen island, paint the cabinets in a fun or complimentary color, and change the knobs for an updated look. Cabinets can also be repurposed for additional garage storage.

Repurpose Flooring

Natural and stained wood will add warmth to any space. Wood accents have become a major focus for today’s design trends. Not only is wood used as flooring, but is also repurposed as a strong design feature on other surfaces. My tip for repurposing wood and laminate flooring is to create a focal point by adding the wood to your walls or ceilings. For a greater transformation consider repurposing wood as a back drop in your built-in bookcases or wrapping wood around your kitchen island. The more interesting the wood grain or pattern the greater the impact.
