Homewares store Didriks, and Local Root, the kitchen store now open at 77 Leonard St. in Belmont Center.

Didriks and Local Root has moved their Cambridge location to a new space in Belmont Center, 77 Leonard St., and will be having a grand opening Dec. 2 and 3.

The former Macy’s building on Leonard street has been remodeled to include several new tenants, including locally owned stores, Didriks and Local Root. The property is located right off the route 2 corridor and is only 10 minutes from Cambridge. The new development is “one of the most exciting retail developments in the Greater Boston area,” said owner, Jonathan Henke.

The close to 4,000 square foot space will feature two floors of products for the home. Local Root, the kitchen store hosts a selection of cookware, bakeware, knives and kitchen accessories from brands including Breville, Le Creuset, All-Clad, Staub and Zwilling. It will be located on the upper level.

Didriks, on the lower level, will showcase fine outdoor furniture, linens, dinnerware, glassware and home accessories. Featured brands include Alessi, Brahms Mount, Chilewich, Libeco, Simon Pearce and more.

Additionally, customers will also enjoy plenty of parking and a wide variety of other shops in the area. The store will be handicap accessible and will be open seven days a week.

Champagne Cake with Gin Buttercream Frosting

Silver or white dragee candies (optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease 3 8-inch Anolon® round cake pans and line the bottom of each pan with parchment paper.

2. Place the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl and stir vigorously with a balloon whisk until mixed together. Place the butter, sugar and vanilla in a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and cream on medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating to incorporate the egg completely before adding the next one.

3. Add half the flour mixture into the batter and beat to incorporate. Add the champagne and repeat. Add the remaining flour and beat until just incorporated. Divide the batter into the 3 pans and bake in the oven 22 to 25 minutes long, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

4. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto an Anolon® wire rack and peel the parchment paper off. Cool completely before assembling.

5. Once the cake layers are cool, make the buttercream by placing the egg whites, sugar and salt in the bowl of stand mixer. Set the bowl in a pan with simmer water and whisk the egg whites until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture has reached 160°F. Place the pan in the stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Beat the sugary egg whites on high speed until they turn shiny white and fluffy like meringue.

6. Continue to beat the egg whites for 8 to 10 minutes on high speed, until the egg whites have cooled to room temperature. Add the butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating the frosting until it incorporates the butter before adding more. Continue to add all the butter in this way.

7. Once the butter is added, switch to the paddle attachment and add the gin. Beat on medium high speed until the gin is incorporated and the frosting is smooth in consistency.

8. Make the soaking syrup by stirring together the champagne and sugar until most of the sugar is dissolved. It’s fine if there is still some undissolved sugar at the bottom of the bowl or measuring cup.

9. Assemble the cake by placing one layer on the cake stand or serving platter and brushing 1/3 of the champagne soaking syrup over the cake. Frost the top of the cake layer with frosting and place another layer of cake on top of the frosting. Repeat with the champagne soaking syrup and frosting. Place the final cake layer and brush the remaining soaking syrup on the cake layer. Frost the top and sides of the cake then sprinkle the top of the cake with the decorative dragées if using.

Triumphant tabletops: New trends, old traditions combine for scene-stealing holiday dinners – Florida Times

If you were to conduct a poll among those hosting a dinner during the holidays and ask about the kind of table they’d like to set, you’re likely to draw similar responses: “Memorable.” Yes, that would be the experience, and the savoring of all that delicious food you’re going to prepare. Add candles and flowers or a cleverly composed seasonal centerpiece? Check!

But what makes the table fresh, festive or glamorous? It’s all in the mix. As we take inventory each year of our own dinnerware, flatware, glasses and serveware, some likely with sentimental value, we realize that while we are probably covered on the basics, we may want to tweak the traditional pieces. Try out a new dish, layering it in as an accent, much like an herb or spice you’ve never sampled.

If you shop for pieces to supplement what you already own, you’re likely to spot a few trends. While there has been an undercurrent of more casual, relaxed furnishings in home decor, there is a countertrend of more embellishment in furniture, wall and floor surfaces, as well as fabrics, which is expressed in details such as embroidery. The holiday table is the perfect spot for dressing up, even if it’s just napkins stitched with pretty holly.

Metallic accents always add a bit of glamor, from gleaming polished serving pieces to mercury glass votives to burnished gold chargers. Gold is still on trend, but so is mixing in other metal finishes like silver and copper. Texture also is important, as well as organic themes and natural materials like rattan, twigs, hemp and burlap. In tabletop designs, artisanal looks, like irregular or burnished edges of plates or cups, celebrate craft.

Especially compelling are images that are hand-drawn, hand-painted or watercolored. A few of these for the holidays are whimsical, with fanciful depictions, like Dasher donning a tux (at Pottery Barn), brightly attired snowmen (Crate and Barrel) or old Saint Nick with a modern look in a series of delightful watercolors by Italian artist Alessandro Taddei for Vietri.

Others are as fresh as fallen snow, with wispy evergreens asymmetrically gracing the side of a plate.

Brushes of gold, rose gold, platinum and silver are dressing up casual stoneware, sometimes in seemingly random streaks or drizzled spots that resemble raindrops. Matte finishes are striking a chord, and are sometimes paired with glossy touches in a single plate.

Glassware is anything but static, enlivened by a rainbow of hues. Jewel tones like sapphire, emerald, ruby and amethyst add clear sparkle with uber elegance. A reboot of lusterware, that pretty iridescent glassware that was popular during the early part of the 20th century, is a way to introduce subtle shades of blue or rose.

Manufacturers also are coloring stems and even the barrels of glasses. Relief patterns and etchings with playful polka dots, stripes and other geometric patterns have energized glass offerings. Adding a set of these fresh silhouettes can extend the fashionable style at the table.

At a recent tabletop show in New York, blue reinforced its stronghold as a perennially favorite color. It always translates well on a holiday table.

Deborah Shearer, a tabletop trend-spotter who heads Table and Dine, a lifestyle brand and marketing studio, set a stunning table with plates by artist Darbie Angell and a striking black-and-white runner.

“The stripes are bold, but it allowed room to highlight the watercolors and Darbie’s grand style,” said Shearer. “Vases filled with blue-colored water and single stems of irises were kind of icing on the cake.”

Rich cobalt often is a go-to hue on Hanukkah tables, and new dreidel-patterned dishes at Pottery Barn are modern in graphics and placemats on an open field. Kim Seybert, whose signature is luxe beaded table runners and placemats, designed an out-of-this-world wood placemat called Cosmos in vivid shades of blue with gold foiling in swirls. It’s especially fetching with traditional china bordered in blue and gold.

At Sur la Table, a traditional holly and pine collection, which features a central Christmas motif with a hollyberry border and red outlines on scalloped plates, is set on a red plaid charger, which would be equally striking with solid white.

White dinnerware, modern or traditional, of course goes with most everything. It’s so easy to decorate around it in palettes of your choosing, whether traditional for Hanukkah or Christmas, or something unpredictable in hue or pattern.

For those who don’t like fussy decor or table settings, there’s an art to the minimal as well.

“Each table is a blank canvas that provides a creative opportunity to combine colors and textures,” said Sandy Chilewich, whose eponymous brand features a range of textured vinyl placemats, some dressed with metallics. “Around the holidays, creating a warm, inviting environment is as important as the good food. It sets the tone and plays a big part in bringing people together.”

With so much traffic on Pinterest and Instagram, as well as blogs and table-setting tips on retail sites, we have much more access to creative solutions, even rounded out with recipes to supplement your own. In turn, this range of options really seems to feed the courage to try something new, or serve as a catalyst to believe you can do something spectacular, even if you’ve never fancied yourself as artistic.

Above all, it’s about creating an experience, and no matter what the holiday, giving thanks for the company of family and good friends.

Refinishing A Vintage KitchenAid Mixer

Kitchenaid Customer Service is awesome. True story, and they found me a replacement.

I purchased this Accolade 400 as my first stand mixer. With great
expectations, I awaited its arrival, with ingredients freshly bought, just
waiting to be mixed into delicious chocolate chip cookies.

The mixer arrived and was promptly un-boxed, the manual read, the beater
bar and bowl installed. The butter was melting, the white and brown sugar
measured, the flour, baking soda and salt sifted into a bowl. Tasty
chocolate chips waited in a measuring cup all their own. All was ready!

I poured the now-melted butter in the bowl, set the mixer to ‘2’, and
started to add the brown sugar. Suddenly, with a loud *grruunk*, the
mixer stalled! “What’s this?” I asked myself. “Surely liquid butter and
an 1/8 cup of sugar cannot bring 400 watts of mixing goodness to a halt!”

After a few attempts to restart the mixer, I concluded that there must be
a defect in the planetary gear system. With great despair heavy upon my
heart, I called the 800 customer service number. I spoke with a charming
young lady, whom I shall call Marsha (mostly because I forgot to write her
name down, and partly just because I like the name). Marsha listened to
the mixer say “*grruunk*” for her also, and declared it needed to be
replaced. I like to think she had a catch in her voice and a tear in her
eye when she told me this. An early grave for so fine a device is a
travesty, indeed.

Marsha told me of the most excellent warranty exchange, how UPS would
deliver a shiny replacement mixer to me, and I would merely have to put
the mixer that says *grruunk* back into its box, set it on my front
porch, and a few days later, UPS would take it away to be delivered to
Kitchenaid heaven, where it would be put to rest, hopefully after an
autopsy was performed, so the elusive 6-sigma defect rate goal could be
attained for future generations of mixers (that’s 2 defects per billion).
I did not speak to Marsha of my penchant for commas and run-on sentences.
That would have to wait for another day.

Then, in a plot twist reminiscent of a bad romance novel (which I have
never read, but have heard about), she twisted the knife, and told me that
the Accolade 400 (the most powerful Kitchenaid tilt-head mixer ever made)
was discontinued! “Oh no!” I thought. “Oh no!” I said to Marsha. “It’s
true,” she said.

But hope rose it’s head again, as Marsha told me that I had a choice to
make. I could choose to replace the Accolade 400 with a 325 watt Artisan,
and she would include an extra 3 quart bowl, or, I could upgrade to the
Professional 5 Plus Lift-bowl mixer — the second most power mixer in the
Kitchenaid universe! Accepting the Professional 5 Plus, I would not have
nightmares of turning into Tim Taylor, and attempting to bolt a 1970
Chrysler 426 Hemi engine to the side of the Artisan for ultimate mixing
action (although the idea of chrome exhaust and flames painted on the side
did have a certain allure).

I considered which mixer I would prefer, while at the same time
considering asking Marsha to marry me (this idea was later vetoed by my
wife). With a decision firmly in mind, I told Marsha, “I’ll take the
Professional 5 Plus, the second mo…” “Yah, yah,” she said, “I know that
part of that dialog” (I may be remembering small parts of the conversation
incorrectly here, you’ll have to excuse me).

Marsha and I exchanged information, and I promised to write every week
from wherever I was stationed for the duration of the war. Or maybe I
just gave her my shipping address, and we exchanged pleasantries and
disconnected. In any case, a new Professional 5 Plus mixer would soon be
arriving on my front porch, and I could return to my aborted attempt to
make chocolate chips cookies, which I would use to woo Marsha to marry me.
Or perhaps I would just eat them.

A few days later (far fewer than the 7 to 10 Marsha told me I may have to
wait), the mixer arrived. Like it’s predecessor, it was un-boxed, the
manual read, the beater bar and bowl installed. Only this time, there
were no odd noises, and cookies were made, and all was well. Mostly.

“Mostly?” you might say to yourself, much like I would if I had managed to
read this far wondering what this person was rambling about. Well, truth
be told, when Marsha offered me the options for exchange, I thought I
would be happy with a lift-bowl type mixer. The sad, unfortunate reality
is that after making several batches of cookies, I find the lift-bowl very
awkward. In fact, it’s almost created a rift between my mixer and I, and
soon we may have to seek therapy (we talked about making more cookies
together, but decided it would be mutually unsatisfying).

Yes, the awesome power that the Professional 5 Plus displays is truly,
well, awesome. It looks like you could mix concrete with it, toss in a
few bricks, and it would break them up like soggy marshmallows. My
fingers fear contact with the beater bar, as surely it would rip my arm
off (I think I would discard the cookie dough if that happened, however).
But the lift-bowl action just doesn’t make me happy. I find it annoying
to have to remove the beater just to remove the bowl. And because the
power head cannot be tilted back, it’s awkward to scrape the beater when
the butter clumps on it. And, as we all know, perfect baked goods cannot
be achieved unless one is truly happy (I found that in a fortune cookie).

Good people of Kitchenaid, I implore you, please fix the Accolade 400 you
found this rambling literary disaster attached to, and allow me to return
the Professional 5 Plus (“The second most pow… right.”) back to you.
Surely, somewhere in Kitchenaid heaven, there must be an Accolade 400
willing to donate it’s soul (or planetary gear set) to restore the life
force of this poor unit, who never truly had a chance to suffer culinary
distress at my hands (hmm, maybe that was a bad way to phrase it…).
Incidentally, if this actual Accolade 400 were swapped out, and an Onyx
Black were available, I’d be even happier with that.

In all seriousness, if it is possible to get a replacement Accolade 400
and return the Professional 5 Plus, I would be very happy. Marsha (I
really wish I had her correct name) was great to talk to, explained all
the options, was well-spoken, and overall just a pleasant person. Perhaps
you can tell who she was from the ticket number, which is 1234567. It is
truly a shame that more companies don’t have a warranty and customer
service like yours.
