This popular, highly rated knife goes on sale every few months, and for under $20, you really can’t go wrong. 2. A countertop herb garden

Cooking with fresh herbs always makes the food taste better, but buying them at the store is a pain. You can never use all of them before they go bad, and it’s just wasteful and expensive. So why not grow them right on your counter? The AeroGrow AeroGarden can handle up to six different plants at once, making it easy to always have your favorites on hand (and it comes with seeds to get started!). Not only does it come with an automatic light to keep plants healthy all year long, but the garden can remind you when your plants need to be watered. Did I mention this usually costs $180, but it’s marked down to $120 right now?

It comes with an 8-inch chef’s knife, a bread knife, a santoku knife, a utility knife, a paring knife, a sharpening steel, kitchen shears, and six steak knifes, all in a timeless wood block.

Get the Cuisinart 15-piece stainless steel knife set for $55.24 and save $15

4. A stunning set of copper cookware

Do you know anyone who loves to cook but is stuck using old, scratched pots and pans with chips and wiggly handles? Why not surprise them with replacements they’re sure to love? This best-selling Gotham cookware set is not only made of steel and highly durable, but it’s all nonstick too. For just $75, this is a robust collection. It includes a 8.5-inch frying pan, a 10.25-inch frying pan, a 1-quart sauce pan, a 1.5-quart stock pot, a 2.5-quart stock pot, a 5-quart stock pot, a steamer insert for the largest stock pot, and lids for all but the small frying pan.

Get the Gotham 12-Piece Copper NonStick Kitchen Set for $74.99 and save $35

5. A kitchen mat for comfortable cooking

OK, this might seem kind of weird as a gift. A floor mat? Well, it’s actually really great for anyone who spends hours on their feet, especially baking cookies for the whole family or preparing a feast. It provides cushion that can prevent and ease foot and back pain, and it’s extra study to prevent slips. This GelPro mat usually costs $60, but it’s nearly half off right now. It may not be the flashiest gift to give this year, but it’s one that will be well-used and loved for years to come.

Get the NewLife by GelPro Anti-Fatigue Kitchen Mat for $34.99 and save $25

Christmas table settings: formal or simple?

Christmas table settings: formal or simple?

No matter what your style, these table settings are sure to inspire.

FORMAL GLAMOUR

Sandra Kaminski is a table setting connoisseur. In the years of hosting dinner parties she has accumulated over 100 table cloths and numerous sets of crystal and china dinnerware.

This December she hosted a Christmas dinner party for 80 guests and the morning of she had a truck load of flowers arrive to decorate with.

Sandra Kaminski’s Christmas table last year featured a gingerbread house and white flowers.

It’s flowers, she says, that really make a table setting, and should be the first item that goes on to the table when setting it up.  “Look at a table like a garden,” she says, “well designed gardens have layers and a table needs layers too.”

Christmas table-setting tips

Start with a colour scheme. Last year Kaminski’s Christmas table was green, white and silver, this year she’s chosen a red and white theme.

“Colour is really important,” she says. “Everything needs to be co-ordinated.”

Start with the flowers, either a few vases scattered over the length of the table, or one long vase down the middle. The arrangements should be tight bunches, in varying shades of the colour scheme, Kaminski suggests.

Kaminski prefers to keep food off the dining table.

“The height of the flowers is really important, you need to be able to talk to and see the person sitting opposite you.”

Next to go on the table are the dinnerware and glassware. Kaminski always puts four crystal glasses at each place setting; a red wineglass, a white wineglass, a champagne glass and a tumbler.

“Everything should be clean and polished and no plastic cups.”

Thread some fairy lights along the centre of the table for some festive sparkle.

Follow on from the plates and glasses with napkins, crackers and decorations. All of which should be in line with the colour scheme.

“There’s no need to overdo the decorations or overcrowd the table,” says Kaminski, “flowers and the sparkle of glassware is often enough. If you do use decorations, keep them small and place them around plates or on the edge of dishes.”

Kaminski likes to leave all food dishes off the table. “It may start off looking pretty, but once everyone has started feasting, these dishes just look ugly. Plus it’s good for people to get up and move around a little bit.”

Instead of a table cloth opt for a simple table runner.

Little touches like candles can make all the difference too, she says. Even in the middle of the day they’re good for ambience; “there’s usually a dark corner somewhere that can do with a bit of added glow.”

If you’re taking your Christmas table outside, Kaminski suggests being conscious of what ground your setting up on, it’s best to make sure it’s level.

“People tend to relax a bit more when they’re outside and things get knocked over a bit more, so keep an eye out for this.”

Pohutukawas give any table a festive Kiwi feel.

SIMPLE AND NATURAL

Tina Stephen of the online interior design service Roomie likes to keep her Christmas table decorations simple. “Don’t over decorate, choose natural materials and leave the red and green decorations in the shop,” she says.

When it comes to choosing a tablecloth she says it depends on the table in question and what shape it is.

“Generally speaking a washed cotton or linen tablecloth in a soft army green or dark grey creates a practical and beautiful canvas for a Christmas setting. Offset this with crisp white linen napkins.”

Like Kaminski, Stephen opts for flowers as the centre piece for a table setting but she advises not to overpower the tabletop.

Leaning more toward a natural and organic arrangement she suggests displaying foraged pohutukawa flowers and pine scented candles work nicely. “Or better yet, hang a botanical arrangement from the ceiling to avoid tabletop clutter,” she says.

Whilst decorations are necessary for a festive feel, she prefers to keep it minimal and purchase locally made heirloom pieces or even make her own. “Our Plump Co wreath from last year is still up on the wall, it’s so beautiful.”

Stephen will always include beautiful candles, polished cutlery and vintage plates, however she says leave name cards off the table; “they’re far too formal for a Kiwi christmas.”

LG’s induction stove is just too expensive

LG did well by the LSE4617ST, a $3,700 slide-in stove with an induction cooktop and an electric oven. The appliance is full of bonus features that are designed to speed up cooking, whether you need to boil, broil or roast. It can even connect to Wi-Fi so you can control your oven when you’re away.

But these extras don’t drastically change the overall performance of the oven — it just drives the price up. And not everything lives up to its potential. For example, the oven comes close to burning burgers, and the Wi-Fi app is limited in what you can do from your phone.

The LSE4617ST is one of the best LG ovens I’ve reviewed in a while. Unfortunately, its price is too high. Wait for this range to go on sale, or consider a freestanding and less-expensive induction oven like the $1,700 Kenmore 95073 ($1,499.99 at Sears) or the $2,000 GE PHB920SJSS ($1,649.00 at Amazon.com).

LG loads up on extra features

Tyler Lizenby/CNET

Like other LG ovens, the LSE4617ST is a hefty-looking appliance. This stove is a standard width (30 inches) and is a slide-in model, which means it’s designed to fit flush with your bottom cabinets, and all the controls are located on the front of the appliance. LG outfitted the LSE4617ST with stainless steel and sturdy knobs that add to its stately appearance.

The LSE4617ST’s smooth cooktop has four induction burners and one warming zone (learn more about induction here). The burners have an LED bar below them to show the power levels of each burner when they’re in use. Like other induction cooktops we’ve tested, each burner is marked with a cross as opposed to a traditional circle, so it’s important to keep the product’s manual close by to make sure you’re using the right size cookware for each burner. And speaking of cookware, you’ll need pots and pans that are made of a magnetic base material. Newer cookware will have an “induction ready” or “induction capable” label. If you’re not sure if your cookware will work with induction burners, take a magnet and see if it sticks to the bottom of your pot or pan. It’s ready for induction if the magnet sticks; if not, you’ll need new cookware.

There are four burners on the cooktop, and a warming zone in the back-right corner.

The LSE4617ST’s oven is a roomy 6.3 cubic feet with a convection fan built into the back wall to help evenly distribute warm air throughout the oven cavity. The oven has the following settings: convection bake, convection roast, speed roast, warm, proof, self clean, easy clean, broil, speed broil and bake. LG includes two traditional oven racks and a gliding rack that works a lot like a drawer to make removing items from the oven easier. There’s also a temperature probe you can use on the convection roast setting to track the internal temperature of what you’re cooking. Below the oven, the LSE4617ST has a warming drawer to keep food hot until you’re ready to eat.

Wi-Fi adds limited usefulness to LG oven

LG has included wireless connectivity with other ovens I’ve tested, such as the LG LDG4315ST and the LG LDE4415ST, so you could control some of the ovens’ function from an app. On those ovens, LG used NFC (near-field communication), which meant you had to hold your smartphone or tablet right next to the oven for the two to connect. This was frustrating because you still had to be right next to your oven to operate it from your device.
