The X-class-rated way to go camping: Merc’s pick-up clamping tag-alongs revealed

► First Mercedes X-class campers
► Pick-up trucks adapted for canvas
► Shown at holiday show in Stuttgart

If a regular loadbed isn’t enough to sleep on, Mercedes-Benz has the answer for you: it’s shown its first X-class pick-up camper conversion, with a detachable sleeping unit that slots above the truck’s flatbed.

Due to be shown at the Caravan, Motor, Touristik (CMT) show in Stuttgart from 13-21 January 2018, the Merc X-class camping accessory was developed by third-party specialists and calls to mind the portable tent accessories available for the Land Rover Defender.

With 2m of headroom, a 150cm wide main sleeping area and a three-burner gas stove in the kitchen, the detachable camper unit from specialist Tischer is a viable camping option for a couple, according to Daimler. It says there’s even space for a shower and the kitchen converts into a second bed.

Why is Mercedes hellbent on offering so many camper vans?

Because the market is booming, according to its analysis. Between January and October 2017 nearly 38,000 new camper vans were registered, according to the German Caravanning Industry Association – up 5000 on the previous year.

‘It is important to us that our vehicles appeal to camper van bodybuilders as well, of course, to end customers,’ said Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. ‘The X-Class fits seamlessly into our established product range. We are proud to introduce first camper van solution approaches together with Tischer and VanEssa at the CMT, just two months after the vehicle’s launch.’

A Mercedes X-class mobile kitchen too

VanEssa has built a proper kitchen in the back of the X-class (below)for smart outdoor catering functions. The 250kg module has a fridge, sink and storage for crockery and more and is finished in teak decking for an upmarket look.

Make your Mercedes X-class into an outdoor kitchen

Mercedes-Benz Vans also showed a variety of Marco Polo editions, all of which will be offered in right-hand drive and therefore sold in the UK. Plus there’s a new smartphone-operated stereo option which brings a touch of Sonos to camping in the big Merc camper.

Sounds like glamping at Glasto just got a little bit posher…

What Indian stalls are showcasing in DITF

The Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) entered its sixth day on Saturday. On the previous day it had arguably the highest number of visitors so far in its 23rd edition, on account of weekend.

With an increasing number of visitors flocking to the fair as it progresses, the attractions and sales have both gone up. Almost all the stalls are now completely stocked, and are doing business in full flow.

Despite the majority of the stalls being owned by local brands, one of the main attractions of the DITF is the scores of foreign stalls showcasing their products. These stalls are always spectacularly designed, have a wide range of attractive items on display, and draw a large audience without fail.

A regular participant at the DITF is India, with numerous Indian stalls exhibiting their products each year.

Like every year, there is a profusion of Indian stalls participating in the fair this year as well, offering a wide range of products such as clothes, shawls, cookware, footwear, carpets, jewelery, and other decorative ornaments.

Among the most popular items to be sold at Indian stalls are shawls. Customers can not only get authentic Kashmiri shawls at the fair, but also enjoy good deals on lots of different varieties to choose from.

Rows of Indian product stalls are a regular sight at the Trade Fair. Among the more popular items being sold at this year’s Indian stalls are shawls and winter clothes, cutlery, kitchen accessories, jewelry and footwear        Photo: Rajib Dhar

“Customers are always looking for good shawls as it is still winter and shawls are very fashionable,” said Imran Mirza, owner of a Kashmiri shawl stall.

“Shawls at budget prices are the most sought-after, while those costing up to Tk3,000 are also proving to be quite popular.”

Another Indian clothing stall owner, Khurshid Ahmed Sufi, voiced his satisfaction at the how the first weekend of the fair was advancing, saying: “Customers are not only interested in shawls, but Indian clothes as well.”

“I have sold clothes costing as much as Tk20,000, while other decorative ornaments such as cushions are also proving to be well admired this time around,” he added.

A visitor at the fair, Uzma Zaman, said: “Local products can always be bought from the local markets, but genuine foreign products are not so easily available, especially at good prices and deals.”

“It is next to impossible to find a shawl I like. Moreover, I can get good deals on Indian shawls and clothes at the fair, and there are plenty of stalls and collections to choose from,” she added.

In addition to shawls and clothes, customers were also seen crowding other Indian stalls selling goods such as cutlery and jewelery, with most of the customers being women.

In addition, Indian footwear stalls were also packed with customers, with the manager of such a stall, Prateek Das, claiming: “Sales are good. All my products cost above Tk1,000 each, and we have had a large number of customers since morning.”

Another popular attraction at Indian stalls was the array of kitchen utilities such as vegetable cutters. Salespersons provided live demonstrations of their products every 20–30 minutes, speaking in megaphones to the large number of eagerly watching spectators gathered outside their stalls.

Did Pope Francis Write the ‘Gentle Reminder’ Message?

Look, this life will pass fast, do not fight with people, do not criticize your body, do not complain so much, do not lose sleep by the beads, be sure to kiss your parents, do not worry so much about leaving the house flawless, let the dogs around, do not keep the bowls, use the new cutlery, do not save your favorite perfume so much, use it to walk with yourself, spend your favorite sneakers, repeat your favorite clothes, so what? If it is not wrong, why not now? Why not run away? Why not pray now instead of waiting to pray before bed? Why not call now? Why not forgive now?

Christmas is expected a lot, Friday, the other year, when I have money, when love comes, when it’s perfect … Look, it’s not going to be perfect, the human being can not reach it because he simply was not made for So, enjoy this rehearsal of life and do it now, do everything you want as long as you do not leave God sad. Do you know the abundant life God has promised? Well, it’s this, that you fill every day with little hopes without blaming yourself for having fun, without judging yourself for being so simple and happy with the little. Look, I bet the fools turn out to be happier.

Let’s go to Sta. Barbara! | SunStar

I would like to think that our history books do not highlight enough the exciting event that is The Cry of Sta. Barbara, that 1898 revolt that gave the municipality its independence from Spain after the Philippine flag was raised for the first time outside Luzon.

This municipality, 30 minutes from Iloilo City, is perfect for a day trip. Here, one will discover uniqueness that will surprise a traveler even if he or she did not exactly roll out from under a rock. It pays, too, to get the municipality’s best guide, the dynamic and enthusiastic Tourism Officer Irene Magallon.

A nice and easy tour can start with breakfast at the Sta. Barbara Golf Course that was built by Scottish engineers in 1907. The golf course is the first in Asia. The engineers were hired to work on Panay Railways and brought the game that originated in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Rolling greens fields, and ducks swimming in the pond make very charming scenes. The clubhouse front desk have counters made of acacia wood from the fallen acacia trees of the grounds. There is a small golf museum where enthusiasts can learn about the club’s history.

The next destination was, for me, the highlight of the day although it was the least flamboyant. Miss Irene brought me to WUTHLE, or Women United Through Handcrafted Lace and Embroidery. Founded by a Belgian sister and housed at the Western Visayas Sanitarium (formerly the Leprosarium), WUTHLE is the only bobbin lace producer in the country.

Beautiful, delicate, and fascinating to watch, bobbin lace making is also a declining industry. At its peak, it had 60 tatters; now, only seven ladies, the youngest of which is in her 40s, make lace. They produce elegant pieces of lace that are used as doilies, lace inserts and edging, and ornamental pieces. Some of them also make embroidered items with similar stunning craftsmanship.

Sixty-year-old Manang Delia laments that the young ones are not interested in the craft anymore and prefer to tinker with their cellphones. Oh, dear. If only the young ones know how rewarding it is to continue this unique handicraft. I pray that bobbin lace-making will find interesting young minds and heart to keep it alive for a very long time.

Perhaps my prayers will be answered in the brick and coralstone Sta. Barbara Church. Declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as a National Historical Landmark in 1990, and a National Cultural Treasure in 2013, this cruciform church underwent restoration for a year and four months with financial support from the NHCP and the Iloilo Provincial Government from 2013 to 2015. Congratulations are in order for this project. If permission can be asked, have a look at the spruced up wooden Moorish-inspired convento built alongside the church.

Just across the church is the well-curated Sta. Barbara Centennial Museum. Here, local hero Martin Delgado is honored with his own section. There are also a war memorabilia, a dinnerware collection, and artifacts from the Panay Bukidnon with their distinctive hand-embroidered blouses.

Outside, the landscaped park nurtures several catmon treelings that Ms. Irene is hoping would grow tall and sturdy and bear many fruit. Sta. Barbara’s old name is catmon, and with the old springs the new, but the old is never forgotten.

Many, many thanks to Miss Irene Magallon for facilitating my visit around Sta. Barbara. Many, many thanks, too, to the municipality of Sta. Barbara under Mayor Dennis Superficial.

Monogram® Invites Owners to Elevate Everything | Business Wire

LOUISVILLE, Ky.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–For those who hold even their home appliances to the highest standards,
Monogram® announces a new campaign to Elevate Everything™ in
the kitchen and beyond. With a portfolio of ultra-premium appliances,
this bold, yet refined, brand aims to exceed expectations in every
product detail, because Monogram doesn’t cut corners—it polishes them to
seamless perfection.

Including topline ranges, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers and more,
Monogram offerings are defined by purposeful design and exceptional
craftsmanship, and are complemented by one-of-a-kind creations to
amplify owners’ culinary ambitions.

And now, by partnering with some of the world’s most talented artisans,
Monogram is creating a stunning selection of innovations that are truly
unique to their category.

In the kitchen with Zac Posen

As part of a new collaboration with Monogram, global fashion designer
and cookbook author Zac Posen will design a Column refrigerator panel.
This high-fashion accent piece created by Posen adds an element of
intrigue to premium décor and serves as inspiration for how Column
appliances can be uniquely personalized. This is the first of other
exclusive projects planned with Posen this year.

Posen is a renowned fashion icon on the red carpet, worn by leading
women, including Michelle Obama, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman and
Rhianna. Others know him as a judge on Lifetime’s mainstay “Project
Runway.” Globally, Posen’s collections represent the most refined
qualities of glamour, and now his signature style will be reflected in
the kitchen.

“Zac Posen’s passion and pride for his brand make him the perfect
ambassador for Monogram,” said Ed Mammorella, Monogram marketing
manager. “It’s a bonus to partner with a designer who equally enjoys
spending time in the kitchen as his latest cookbook, Cooking with Zac,
attests.

Media Meet Greet with Zac Posen:

Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 10:30 a.m. Posen will host a QA with media
in attendance at the KBIS show. Want to talk spring color trends? Runway
to homeruns in the kitchen? Get a copy of Posen’s new cookbook, grab a
photo and grab some quotes from the designer for your next story.
(Monogram booth W1712)

For show attendees, the first 100 fans to the Monogram booth at 11 a.m.
on Jan. 9 will receive a copy of Cooking with Zac and photo
opportunity with the fashion designer. Posen will cook with LA Chef Nick
Liberato at 1 p.m. in the Monogram booth.

Setting a higher standard

Industry-leading innovation is already a hallmark of the Monogram brand,
evidenced by the introduction of the Monogram Pizza Oven—the only
ventless electric indoor pizza oven that can achieve restaurant-quality
results. Each hand-finished gourmet pie-maker is built by a team of just
four craftsmen and is now available in two distinct styles—one that
makes a statement by standing out from the wall or cabinetry and another
that is more understated, sitting flush against its backdrop.

To demonstrate the fine craftsmanship of the oven itself, Monogram will
showcase handcrafted pizza peels created in partnership with William
Campbell of Anvil Goods in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Campbell, a master
carpenter and fifth generation metal worker, hand sculpted walnut and
brass pieces with the same obsessive attention to detail that Monogram
employs in every product it creates. Check out a behind-the-scenes video
on the craftsmanship of both: www.monogram.com

Monogram is also partnering with Borough Furnace, a metal casting
workshop in Owego, New York, to bring owners even more elevated options
in cooking accessories. Borough Furnace skillets, pans and hearth tools
are made by hand in small batches using a traditional process and are a
perfect match for the exceptional quality of Monogram appliances.

More innovation at KBIS

Select KBIS showgoers* can also glimpse Monogram’s new kitchen island
concept—a multifunctional surface that packs food preparation, cooking,
traditional countertop usage and mobile device charging into one
eye-catching, yet inconspicuous, unit.

Distinguished by a spacious induction cooktop concealed beneath a
glass-ceramic pane crafted by EuroKera, this island of the future is yet
another way Monogram is making it possible for owners to cook, eat,
connect, party and live in seamless harmony with their kitchens. This
all-in-one cooktop countertop has an anticipated arrival date of August
2018.

*Media members are invited to an exclusive showing of this concept
island in the Monogram hospitality suite—please respond for more details.
