How to Clean a Burnt Pot – Pots and Pans Cleaning Advice

If you’ve ever burned the bottom of a pot or pan while searing meat or after getting distracted by your phone, don’t worry: there’s a simple way to eliminate those dark marks. Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, says she uses her mother’s old tip, which involves water, dishwashing liquid, and that’s it!

How to Remove Burn Marks

1. Fill your pot with hot water and a few squirts of dishwashing liquid, like Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap ($6 for 2 bottles, Then put your pot filled with soapy water on the stove and bring it to a simmer.

2. Let the pot simmer for 15 minutes or more (depending on how much food is stuck on the bottom) and use a spatula to carefully loosen and coax the burnt-on bits off the bottom and sides as they soften.

3. When all of the bits have been removed from the surface of the pot, empty it and scrub it clean with a pad, like Good Housekeeping Seal holder Brillo ($4 for 30 pads,

Chesapeake Home Show set for this weekend

EASTON — The 23rd Annual Chesapeake Spring Home Show, presented by The Star Democrat and sponsored by Long and Foster Real Estate Eastern Shore will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Talbot County Community Center in Easton.

This annual event showcases the newest ideas in home remodeling and construction and offers everything you need to prepare your home for the spring and summer season. The theme this year for the event is “Kitchens, Crafts and Collections.”

Jamie Merida and his team of designers from Bountiful Interiors will share design tips from his experience designing simple to unbelievable kitchen spaces. Merida will present at 11 a.m. Saturday with a focus on color, flooring, appliances and cooking work space triangle strategies. There will be time set aside to entertain audience questions.

Foodies will be thrilled to experience a new concept to the show, Taste Maryland in April. Chesapeake Harvest will host an indoor farm-to-table farmers market on the show floor with more than 15 local farmers, producers and craft beverage makers selling their goods.

Come sip, sample and purchase delights indicative of the Eastern Shore and meet your local farmers. This is a perfect way for all food bon vivants to enjoy a taste of the shore.

Traditional home show vendors and artisan crafters will be available together in the main expo area. There are more than 90 categories that offer a one-of-a-kind setting where you can receive information on your home project under one roof.

Bring the family and have the kids try out the 18-foot dry slide set up on the Community Center lawn Saturday and Sunday for the duration of show hours. Talbot Humane will offer cuddly animals and pet accessories during the event. Grills on Wheels will grill pit beef and sliced turkey breast sandwiches with the fixings. Family friendly food concessions also will be available.

Arrive early for best selection of fragrant spring flowers. Proceeds from flower sales benefit the Star Democrat’s Brighter Christmas Fund, helping local families throughout Mid-Shore counties for more than 30 years. 

Admission is $5 per family and $3 a person. The first 15 people to attend the show each day will get their pick of doorbuster giveaways.

Teen cooks wanted for new Chattanooga Market competition

Officials with the Chattanooga Market have announced a new event for the upcoming market season.

The Team Tennessee Teen Cook-off will be June 24 at the First Tennessee Pavilion.

A sanctioned event by the World Food Championships, the winning team (two students) will be awarded a golden ticket to the WFC even in Orange Beach, Alabama, a Lodge Cast Iron cookware prize package and scholarship funding to Virginia College Culinard Institute in Chattanooga.

Teens are encouraged to enter the competition. 

Team Tennessee Teen Cook-Off is a cooking competition open to students from 9th to 12th grades, home-schooled teens are also eligible (age 15-18). By incorporating local foods from the Chattanooga Market, teen teams will face off in a timed cook-off. The winning team of the competition will receive a golden ticket to compete in the World Food Championship (WFC).

The organizations are looking for teens who are experienced, passionate and knowledgeable about food prep, cooking, safety practices, operating gas ovens/stoves and are comfortable demonstrating their skills in front of a live audience.

About the Competition:

  • The competition is open to the entire state of Tennessee, however, only 5 teams of two will be selected by Chattanooga Market personnel after a review process.
  • A team consists of 2 students: one captain (who fills out the application and is the main contact) and one student (9-12th grade) whom they choose to be their teammate. A teammate is not necessary to compete, a captain may compete alone.
  • The Deadline to apply for the competition is May 1st. Final five contestants will be announced by mid-May.
  • Only online applications are accepted. Please check your calendar for availability on June 24 before applying.
  • By applying to the competition, you are giving permission for use of you/your teen’s photo and name publicly. This includes but is not limited to social media sites, magazine publications, newspaper stories, and local TV news stations.
  • Teen teams should be prepared to make 6 portions of their entry at the competition. (One for each judge and the emcee.) The ingredients will be supplied along with standard pantry items at the time of the competition. However, teens will need to supply the rest. This includes pots, pans, plates, cooking utensils, etc. (much greater details is provided to competitors).
  • Judges will score each teen based on use of local foods, taste, presentation, and creativity.

The Chattanooga Market will return to the First Tennessee Pavilion in April.

The market will open for the 18th season April 28-29 with live music, produce, artisan-prepared foods and more.

Smart, sophisticated and still going strong…fiesta

The Homer Laughlin China Company of Newell, West Virginia reigns as one of the most prolific of all the American dinnerware manufacturers of the 20th century. Turning out tableware, kitchen wares and serving pieces since 1871, their name is synonymous with affordable quality. Many of their patterns became collectable, but one has become the most popular American dinnerware ever produced. It is perhaps best described in their 1936 magazine ads which read, “The new idea in American dinnerware . . . smart, sophisticated, and rich in color. It is the California fashion that has swept the nation. It is Fiesta!”

Collectible Fiesta ware was produced from 1936-1973. It was originally issued with 36 different pieces including basic table service, divided plates, a coffee pot, carafe, candle holders, pitchers, 2 compotes, an ashtray, nappies, a set of 7 mixing bowls, and two covered serving dishes. The 1936 line featured five colors, cobalt blue, light green, yellow, ivory, and a bright orange color that is known as “Fiesta Red.” Turquoise, though often considered one of the original colors, was introduced the following year.

Ever aware of public opinion, Homer Laughlin was quick to drop pieces that did not meet with approval. The first piece to go was a twelve compartment plate that appeared only in the 1936 line. Next was the covered onion soup which ceased production in 1937. The tripod candle holder and the stick handled demitasse coffeepot, and the 10” and 12” vases were all discontinued in 1942. These pieces are considered very rare and will demand top dollar. Although not discontinued from the line several pieces including the sugar bowl, tea cups, utility trays, creamer, the nesting bowls and the ashtray were modified within the first few years of production.

Fiesta Kitchen Kraft was introduced in 1939. This instantly popular line included pie plates, refrigerator sets, mixing bowls, and covered jars in four popular Fiesta colors. Watch for these. They are very collectable.

In 1943 “Fiesta Red” was dropped from the line. Production of the red glaze required the use of uranium which was needed for the war effort.. Sales boomed for Fiesta in the 1940s as they offered incredible deals such as their 7 piece juice set the retailed for only $1. The best year on record for Fiesta sales came in 1948 when they produced over 10 million pieces.

In 1951 a new line of colors was introduced. Cobalt, light green and ivory were retired, replaced with gray, rose, dark forest green and chartreuse. Pieces discontinued in the late 50s included the mustards and marmalades, the 8” vase, the footed salad bowl, relish tray, 11 1/2” fruit bowl, the candle holder, 10 oz. tumblers, the ice pitcher and the large tea pot. Red returned in 1959 and the eleventh Fiesta color, medium green, was introduced.

Sales declined sharply during the ‘60’s and by 1969 the entire line was restyled. The new line contained only 19 pieces and ran in production until 1973. The last two colors introduced were Antique Gold and Turf Green.

As many of you know, values for most tableware and china have plummeted in the past decade. Fiesta, both “Vintage” from pre-1960 and “Original” from the 1930s are the exception and are holding strong in the current market. Until next time…Linda

Spring Into Color!

Spring has officially arrived. Gone are the too many gray days of winter spent cooped up dreaming of sunshine and warm weather. Now, you can spend more time outside and open up the windows to let in the fresh air and bask in all of the season’s glory.

But temperatures aren’t the only thing changing this season. Now’s the perfect time to give your space a makeover based on the latest spring home trends.
What better way to embrace change than by encouraging the same for your living space? It’s a time to think about add some spring color inside. Here are a few 2018 decor trends you could consider following:

Green marble
According to Elle Decor, marble is the home decor trend to get on top of this year, particularly in shades of green. It can add a classic charm to any room without coming across as too vintage or antique. In fact, it may be considered modern if you execute it correctly. Green marble accessories, in the form of coasters, tiles, pots, end tables, serving boards can make a unique statement throughout your home this spring without going overboard.

“Rather than a traditionally feminine look in 2018 they feel especially fresh and more interesting styled in a casual bohemian way,” she told Country Living magazine. “Juxtaposing florals with organic textures and neutral palettes evokes a new kind of elegance that is appealing.”
Consider bold floral prints in your furniture, or complement neutral statement pieces with floral accent decor.

While millennial pink made a big splash last year, lavender is all the rage in 2018, according to Nancy Fire, creative director of HGTV HOME.
“Millennial pink is still around and I still love it, but it’s morphing into lavender and lilac,” she told House Beautiful magazine.

Use lavender accessories and accents to liven up any room this spring. Throw pillows, area rugs, lamp shades and tabletop trinkets in lavender and lilac can make a beautiful and refreshing statement this season. Don’t rule out millennial pink, however. It’s still popular and bound to stick around.
“People were sarcastic about millennial pink at the beginning, but it’s being used to bring out beautiful, soft tones with accents that are deeper,” Fire shared.
