Dining Out: Take a chance on breakfast at Last Chance – News …

PEORIA — Last Chance Bar and Grill touts itself thusly: “Coldest beer in town, cheapest all around.”

Perhaps that’s worth investigating sometime. It’d give me more of a reason to visit the place, which technically is in rural Peoria but sits amid the tiny throwback hamlet of Alta, a true spot in the road.

And though you have to go out of your way to find it, Last Chance is the quintessential roadhouse, weathered but warm it offers meals, snacks and/or potables. From babies to old-timers, the saloon beckons as inviting and pleasant. The setup is simple: a long bar, a square bar, tall tables, short tables and more tables, plus constant convivial conversation.

About the claims regarding beer and cheapness? Beats me. Though I’ve heard rave remarks about their dinners and nightlife, Last Chance to me means breakfast. I don’t mean an egg on toast with coffee, but the kind of mega-grub that you can only handle on the weekend, so that a post-snarf nap is always a possibility.

No, I don’t always eat like that. But for Last Chance, it’s worth making an exception. If you think breakfast is breakfast, give Last Chance a chance.

For example, though the joint has plenty of skillets and combos available, I decided to create my own. The loaded hash browns ($2.99) are not just fried potatoes: the heaping pile also involved cheese, green pepper and onion, which on its own could suffice for a meal.

Of multiple pancake offerings, I wisely went with the single stack ($2.99). As I pondered whether one of anything can actually be a stack, my single pancake arrived, the size of a small hubcap. Sprinkled with powdered sugar, it was a fluffy delight. I imagine that a double or triple stack would not really be a pancake but an actual cake.

I also tried a half-order of biscuits and gravy ($3.29), which were solid if not spectacular.

My wife went the direct menu route and got a veggie skillet ($7.49). All skillets come with two eggs (she chose scrambled) and mixed with specific additions, in her case tomato, green pepper, mushrooms, onion and shredded cheese. The veggies were good but seemed to overwhelm the eggs in quantity; that said, it’s hard to knock getting too much on your plate. On the side comes a choice of bread, and her wheat toast was fine.

And even if the place is packed, service zips along. It’s a team effort. On our visit, staffers stopped by our table about five times, with only one appearing twice. I’m not sure how they do all that, but it’s lickety-split, so who cares?

We will be back, next time I have a late morning free for a nap.

You can save $180 on a Blendtec Classic 575 5-Speed Blender, which not only boasts an airtight seal, but also tracks how much blending time you have left, so you can blend, grab, and go.
