    • The 50/50 Burger, featuring two quarter-pound patties made up of 50% Angus beef and 50% Applewood smoked bacon and aged cheddar cheese, topped with house-made bourbon ketchup, crisp lettuce and sliced tomatoes on a lightly toasted bun

  • Flatbreads Enhancing the flatbread category, the new menu includes four new options such as the Thai Chicken flatbread, Chicken Margherita flatbread, BBQ Chicken flatbread and the Buffalo Chicken flatbread.
  • Skillets The signature skillet category is now more dominant among the menu, highlighting the fan-favorite Chicken Mac + Cheese skillet and the Kickin’ Joeskillet. The new menu also has added a Popper skillet appetizer with craft beer sauce, jalapeos and bacon bits, as well as a seasonal dessert skillet that will rotate throughout the year and will first feature a peanut butter and chocolate skillet topped with two scoops of chocolate ice cream and caramel drizzle.

Newlywed couple renovates Armory and opens event center in Elsberry

Holding a shower, graduation party, an educational seminar or any kind of event?  Look no further than the newest business in Elsberry owned by Brennan and Mikal Lagemann.

The Lagemann’s have purchased what is known as the Armory from the First Baptist Church in Elsberry. The building didn’t sit vacant for long after the church put it up for sale in January, as Lagemann LLC closed on the purchase in late February.

After taking ownership, the project became a family affair to prepare the building for clients to use.  Both Brennan and Mikal come from close knit families, and everyone jumped in to help.  The building contains a stage area, table and chair seating, kitchen, play room, office, restrooms, with everything being handicapped accessible.  In addition, the venue offers stage lighting, speakers, two projectors, and a sound system.

The couple is looking forward to their first event scheduled for May 16 when Cherished Beginnings will hold their preschool graduation.

With the inside of the hall all set for now, they would like to turn their attention to the outside of the building.  They look forward to giving the old brick a face lift, provided finances and time allow them to proceed in the near future.   

This building has been a staple in the Elsberry community for a long time and has had many occupants. The building began as a Kroger store, turned into IGA, then Dollar General, followed by Hauser Hall and finally the Armory.   

Ironic to the situation is that Brennan’s mom, Katie, worked at the Dollar General when she was pregnant with him- in the very same building he is now the proud owner of.

You may be asking yourself why a newlywed couple would want to invest in such a business in the town of Elsberry.

That is easy for Brennan who commented, “I want to invest back into a community that has invested in me.”

Brennan grew up in this community, graduated, served two terms in the military as a medic, went to college, purchased a home, has chosen to begin his family here and is now an entrepreneur in that same community that has supported him his entire life.

While he was serving in overseas in Operation Iraqi Freedom and twice in Operation Enduring Freedom, he can distinctly remember receiving care packages and letters from residents in Elsberry, reassuring him that his effort was appreciated and that he was in everyone’s thoughts and prayers.

It may also be helpful to place your baking dish on a towel once you take it out of the oven rather than putting it directly on a cold counter.

All Those Kitchen Gadgets, but a Sharp Knife Just Might Do

She is an expert on obsolescence, a gimlet-eyed judge of what might have legs. But even Ms. Hesser has a misfit drawer in her kitchen, a mini-museum of the gadgetry of yore. Her particular affliction is melon ballers, including one model with a pea-size scoop (tantalizing for “The Borrowers,” perhaps, but otherwise useless). She also has an egg topper, which slices off the caps of eggs with Gallic precision, a butter curler and a shrimp deveiner.

Despite a soft spot for such arcana, Ms. Hesser is not tempted by certain new trends.

“Once you go down the road of having a kale leaf stripper,” she said, “where do you draw the line? This is something we talk a lot about in our reviews. With kitchen manufacturers, there is this tendency to get so detailed and so tailored with their products, everyone would need 5,000-square-foot kitchens. Not to mention you’re missing out on the pleasure of ripping kale off its stem. You’re letting the tool have all the fun.”
