Farm waste served up as eco-friendly products

Wipawinee and Tharapat Chaisutthiroj left behind the security of company pay cheques to pursue a new start as entrepreneurs when they saw a business opportunity to develop an innovative product line that makes use of the husks – usually considered waste in farming.

They joined up with a Malaysian friend with expertise in research and development. The friend, who lives in the United States, had suggested they go into business together.

Since 2010, the company that they established has produced a range of kitchen accessories made from the husks and the business has enjoyed export success in Europe and the United States. Sales are averaging Bt20 million a month, said Tharapat, who is director of Husks Green Co Ltd, in an interview with The Nation recently.

Tharapat said that, together with the Malaysian partner, they established a company in Singapore called Husks Green International in 2010. The business conducted research and development activities until the partners felt they were ready to launch their first product in 2012.

Using a manufacturing facility in Malaysia, they laid the foundations for the venture’s export success. The inroads into Europe and the United States were aided by a long-established welcoming attitude among consumers in those markets for environmentally friendly products.

“Our first product was a coffee cup and then we went on to develop other kitchen items such as a dish, a bowl, drinking glass, chopping board and the like. All of our products are made from rice husks,” Tharapat said.

Buoyed by their success with the overseas shipments, the company moved the production plant from Malaysia to China, taking advantage of the lower costs. The company continued to carry out research and development in Malaysia.

In another sign of confidence for the company, it set up marketing and distribution operations in Thailand with the establishment of Husks Green Co Ltd in 2017, with registered capital of Bt1 million.

“We decided to open our business in Thailand as part of our plan to expand our market presence into Asian countries,” Tharapat said.

He said the export success encouraged them in their ambitions for the Thai market, which they entered last year with a focus on corporate customers wanting to offer premium products to their customers.

To support its plans for Thailand, the company has begun negotiations with Ecotopia, a marketplace for eco-products at Siam Discovery in Bangkok, for distribution of the products.

The company has also opened a Facebook page for online sales.

“We believe that this is the right time for us to distribute our products in Thailand, as Thai people are becoming increasingly concerned about the environment and are more open to buying eco-products. This is especially true of the young generation,” Tharapat said.

To aid the company’s promotion efforts, Tharapat submitted two of the products – tableware and a chopping board – as entries in the Thailand Green Design Awards 2018 (TGDA2018).

Both products received awards at the event, which was conducted by the Kasetsart Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Product Improvement Institute (KAPI) of Kasetsart University. The winners were announced in March.

The tableware won in the category of life enhancement under the corporate group in the awards, and the chopping board came second in the resource-efficiency category for the corporate group.

“When we won those awards, that helped us to promote our products to the market,” Tharapat said.

He said that if the products enjoy more success in the Thai and Asian markets, the company may set up a new manufacturing plant in Thailand, attracted by the greater access to rice husks as the raw material for the products.

Raleigh’s Pizza La Stella opening in Cary, La Stella Wood Fired …

Downtown Raleigh’s Pizza La Stella restaurant will open a new location in Cary with a third location in North Raleigh not far behind.

The second Pizza La Stella will open in the former Hurricane Grill and Wings at 1389 Kildaire Farm Road, in the Trader Joe’s shopping center in Cary.

With the move to Cary, the La Stella owners have closed La Stella Wood Fired, the Hillsborough Street spinoff that opened in the former H-Street Kitchen last fall. Its last service was Wednesday.

Pizza La Stella owner Rudy Theale said the new spot will open in the third quarter of this year — by mid-August.

“We’re thrilled to become Cary’s hometown pizza and wings spot, the place you go to after Little League games,” Theale said.

The new Pizza La Stella will serve the same menu as its original Fayetteville Street spot, cooking Neapolitan-style pizzas in a wood-fire oven, along with wings, mac and cheese skillets and sandwiches. Everything in the restaurant is cooked in the wood-powered ovens.

La Stella Wood Fired opened in October in the former H-Street Kitchen as an extension of Pizza La Stella, serving sandwiches, game-day appetizers and meats cooked in a wood fired oven. H-Street Kitchen had opened in 2016 in the old Varsity Theater.

Theale said it struggled to catch on, citing the parking struggles on Hillsborough Street and a market driven largely by college students.

“It just didn’t make money,” Theale said. “At the end of the day we thought, why work this hard to break even. We thought the move to Cary was more in line with our vision. You need parking, you need families, rooftops. We found that in Cary.”

Despite two restaurants closing in two years in the location, Theale believes the space can work and that a sports bar might be a good fit.

“The building is beautiful, there’s nothing wrong with the building,” Theale said. “If the price points are right for students, it’s totally doable.”

Hillsborough Street will always revolve somewhat around NC State, to the whims and tastes of students and faculty. The Players Retreat remains an often packed institution, but relative newcomer Gonza has caught on and a Smashed Waffles and future Taco Bell Cantina may be bellwethers to where Hillsborough Street is going.

Theale said one piece of information may help the next sit-down spot.

“It would be good for people to know they can park at NC State after 5 p.m.,” Theale said.

Rapid River landmark marks 75 years

According to Bobbi Ryan, one of the owners of the eatery, Jack’s has been a community staple in Rapid River ever since it opened its doors in 1943.

Ryan explained the Miller family of Rapid River owned the restaurant up until three years ago when Ryan and Cynthia Ivy purchased it.

Over the years, Jack’s has seen some changes, said Ryan, but for the most part, the restaurant is in its original state — including the iconic sign that sits atop the restaurant. The sign was added in December of 1956.

It was removed from the restaurant for a year for repairs and was back at its rightful spot in July of 2016. The sign is considered to be a part of Rapid River’s history.

The back portion of the eatery called “The Halfway House” served as the original owner’s home for a period of time. The name “halfway house” stems from its location being the halfway point between Brampton and St. Jaques, said Ryan.

John “Jack” and Vivian Miller opened the restaurant in 1943. They owned it for years, until it was passed on to their first son, Jack Miller. For a short period of time, Jack’s was known as the “Palm Cafe,” noted Ryan.

The eatery was passed onto Jeff and John Miller, Jack and Vivian’s sons, who owned the restaurant until 2015. Jack Sr. passed away in September of 2004.

Ryan said one thing that Jack’s Restaurant prides itself on is customer service.

“We’re very into our customers,” said Ryan. “Jack (Sr) was good at that, too.”

Ryan explained the customers at Jack’s are loyal and have stuck around for the “up north family style” cooking. Employees and patrons know each other by name and on a personal level.

A lot of high schoolers from Rapid River Public Schools have also made Jack’s their first job, noted Ryan, adding she and Ivy are continuing this tradition and giving students a stepping stone into the workforce.

“We love having Jack’s as a first step for kids,”said Ryan, commenting it provides good job skills for future employment. Currently, over 29 employees work at Jack’s.

Along with workers, customers come back to Jack’s for their made from scratch menu items, said Ryan. In 1964, a visitor to the restaurant could purchase a T-bone steak for $3 and a cheeseburger for 35 cents.

While prices have changed, menu items are near the same, noted Ryan, including omelets, skillets, hand-cut steaks, burgers, sandwiches, fish, baked goods and much more. Ryan said the eatery’s most popular item is its Rueben sandwich.

Ryan noted typically Jack’s busiest times are the first weekend in May through hunting season in November.

This year, business has picked up more than usual, said Ryan, noting she and her employees like the increase in patronage.

To celebrate 75 years, Ryan said Jack’s is hosting a commemorative party on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. The public is welcome to come enjoy appetizers and cake and share their Jack’s stories.

“Every day somebody is telling a story,” said Ryan of the customers and how they remember the restaurant.

Ryan said she thinks Jack’s has stuck around for 75 years because of its continuous pride in the community and sticking with tradition.

5 Great Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Consumer Reports has no financial relationship with advertisers on this site.

Consumer Reports has no financial relationship with advertisers on this site.

Mother’s Day is this weekend, but there’s still time to pick up just the right gift to show Mom just how much you care. If she brought you up to be a Consumer Reports reader, she probably also taught you to spend with an eye for value and quality.

Make her proud with one of these five amazing Mother’s Day gifts. All the items below are recommended by our testers, offer great value, and rank high in our ratings.

Today’s smartphones can rival most point-and-shoot cameras on the market. But if Mom is really into capturing the moment, there are plenty of options that will take her photo game to the next level.

Advanced cameras provide more control over exposure settings. And waterproof cameras can go places your smartphone can’t—like the bottom of a swimming pool.

Advanced point-and-shoot:
 Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II, $1,200
This camera’s 24mm-200mm zoom lens is rare on a point-and-shoot, and the camera allows you to create more professional looking shots, especially in low light. It also has a quality LCD and an excellent viewfinder, making it a breeze to compose and review your shots.

Waterproof, rugged: Canon PowerShot D30, $330
Your mom can go deep with this camera—up to 82 feet below the surface, deeper than any other camera in its class. It also has a built-in GPS, allowing for easy geotagging of photos.

SLR: Canon EOS 200D Rebel SL2 w/EF 50mm camera, $850
This 24-megapixel camera has a 2.9-inch LCD and an image stabilizer. It has a relatively long battery life for an SLR, and produces better-quality video than many other models.

If your mom is still using the same cookware from her wedding registry, it’s probably time for an upgrade.

Match the cookware to her cooktop. Depending on your budget, you can spring for a whole new set or opt for just a key piece or two.

Pots and pans:
Swiss Diamond Reinforced #6010, $600
This nonstick set browned our pancakes evenly, and its nonstick surface stood up to 2,000 strokes of mechanical steel-wool rubbing. Our fried eggs slid right out of the pan and continued to do so (with a nudge) even after the coating showed scratches. The set is made of cast aluminum, and the manufacturer claims the nonstick coating is free of perfluorocatanoic acid (PFOA), which can be found in some nonstick coatings.

Streaming Media

Make it easier for your mom to binge-watch her favorite shows with a set-top streaming device to complement her Hulu or Netflix subscription. The newer devices also allow her to access photo apps or social media sites on her TV.

While Mom may say she doesn’t need a new laptop, the jet engine-like sounds emanating from her device may tell a different story. Chromebooks don’t offer a lot of storage space, but they’re a great option if her computer activities consist mostly emailing, surfing the web, and streaming videos.

Yard Tools

If Mom enjoys keeping up her house’s curb appeal, a string trimmer can guarantee pristine walkways and grass around trees and flower beds. An electric version will suffice for smaller yards, but go with gas for larger properties.
