The Surprising Psychology Behind Our Favorite Kitchen Paint Colors

From a design standpoint, color certainly has the power to transform a room, making tiny rooms feel larger or dark rooms feel brighter. But underneath all that, color also has a hidden talent: affecting the mood of everyone around it. And as the de facto gathering ground for many homes, the kitchen holds a lot of emotional power, making the shade you choose all the more important. Here, five popular kitchen shades and the psychological benefits of each you should consider:

It might not come as too much of a surprise to learn that the color of sunshine and summer is known to inspire feelings of cheerfulness and optimism in a home. Its vibrancy is also an energy booster, which makes yellow a logical choice in a room designed for entertaining. But, even after the crab cakes and white wine slushies are consumed, the happy hue keeps on giving: Some studies show that exposure to the color yellow can promote healthy digestion.

The deep association to tropical waters (read: vacation) undoubtedly makes everyone’s favorite coastal shade an instant stress reducer. Blues of all shades are known to lower blood pressure and slow respiration. And, for time-crunched chefs, blue might be a good choice for its potential to improve focus and efficiency.

A subtle nod to the healthiest of nature’s bounty, this earthy shade may have the power to promote smarter food choices (say, a green smoothie over a box of donut holes). Because of its association with nature, there’s also evidence that green can promote feelings of calm and relaxation—perfect for those who play hostess on the regular.

It’s a long-standing secret in the restaurant and advertising industries that the color red has the power to increase appetite. That’s, of course, good news in a room made for cooking and eating. Similar to yellow, red has energizing and stimulating qualities, so a kitchen that’s used frequently for entertaining might benefit from a pop of lobster-y red. If you’re worried about overwhelming the space, keep the pops to accessories only.

Yes, white is a color! Despite recent claims that white kitchens might be on their way out, we still love this timeless look in a beach house. And if you’re one to feel easily stressed or anxious, a clean and orderly white-washed kitchen can encourage mental sharpness and clarity of the mind. To keep it from feeling cold or sterile, bring in warmth with natural materials, such as wood and wicker.

7 on your Side: Best Buys for June – WABC

June is just around the corner – that means Father’s Day, maybe gifts for grads – or perhaps you need to pick up something for a wedding shower for a June brides.

Before you burn up your plastic, give a listen to some sizzling summer deals especially on Memorial Day Weekend, which unofficially kicks off summer and also marches in some big savings. Large appliances and mattresses will be at or near Black Friday lows. Now is the time to replace and upgrade for a lot less.

Also getting skimpy – the price of lingerie thanks to Victoria’s Secret semi-annual sale.

“Their prices are the lowest ever you’ll see others following suit – Bare Necessities and Fredericks of Hollywood come down with their prices on lingerie – great shower gifts,” says Janice Lieberman, consumer expert for

Wedding season is upon us, and Lieberman says the table is set for great prices on dinnerware.

“You’ll see Kate Spade dishes for as low as nine bucks. I think Macy’s will lead the way – so check around and use coupon codes – and check out all the beautiful dinnerware out there,” she added.

In Mid-June, circle the 17th for Dad!

Trade traditional Father’s Day gifts like tools for tech. He’ll love the smart gadgets that make the house safer and more energy-efficient. Between Memorial Day and July 4th, anything for the smart home, bulbs and thermostats, anything high-tech, anything WiFi that connects you to your house will be on sale, reports

Our favorite splurge – a cooler that keeps beer cold for – wait for it – two weeks! It’s on sale, but still pricey. Good thing the fishing is free.

Many parks will offer free fishing permits which typically run $25-$100. If you want to take dad or the grad to dinner, grub on a discount gift card. will knock its $25 gift card to just $2. After you work off those calories at the gym, memberships go down as the weather gets hot.

After working up a sweat – cool off with a new air conditioning unit. Lieberman says check your air conditioning now, and if you need one – buy.

At Best Buy – 7 On Your Side saw stacks of A/C units, but just a few weeks after just three days of a heat wave in May, they ran out. So get your inventory before it vanishes, says Lieberman.

If you still can’t stand the heat – hit the movies. Second run flicks at Regal and Cinemark cinemas – are just $1 per ticket.

The big takeaway – wait a few weeks on techs for kids like laptops – they’ll be discounted in July when back-to-school sales – you heard that right – start heating up.

Cool Skin Oven Gloves

At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking these gloves were for the garden rather than the kitchen. And that’s the beauty of them. Rest-assured they offer full protection: they are made from the same material used to protect firefighters from intense heat.

Leopard Oven Glove

Double the price of the LBG but you get significantly more feel and look for your buck. The quilting gives extra comfort and bounce, and did we mention the leopards? If you are not a cat person then you can choose from several non-feline designs, but whatever your pattern preference, it’s worth shelling out an extra £2 to brighten up your kitchen.

£4 | Hema | Buy it now

Colourplay Gauntlet Oven Mitt

Sometimes the best things in life are simple (and cheap). At £2 this LBG (little black glove) is everything you need to get by in the kitchen. They are perfect for handling hot saucepans, easy to clean and will go with with anything — bring on the novelty aprons.

Silicone Double Oven Glove

Wrap up the cooking in these silicone double oven gloves. The silicone grips on the outside means that they are heat resistant up to 250 degrees, while the cotton-lined inside means that your hands stay cozy. And best of all with pockets spaced 55cms apart, there’s plenty of length for when you’re handling a casserole with girth.

£21.99 | Lakeland | Buy it now

Organic cotton oven gloves

Okay, so it is a little more than we would plan to spend on a set of heat proof gloves, but these organic cotton oven gloves at £36 a pop are a treat for the eyes, the hands and the soul. Crafted from 100 percent certified cotton they have ethical creds to match their beautiful design. The looser design makes them flexible for protecting your hands and arms no matter the size and shape of pot you’re handling. Safe never looked so stylish.

Sophie Allport Daschund Double Oven Glove

These Dachshunds dog double oven gloves are almost too sweet to use, almost. While the bangers were sizzling, the sausage dogs stayed singe-free.

Cooking is all about balance, flavour and being able to multitask. So why not learn how to identify your balcony or garden birds while you cook? Victoria Eggs London Skyline Oven Glove

If it’s high spec and ultimate protection that you’re after, then you can’t beat the Cool Skin Oven Gloves from Lakeland, which are far from the most expensive at £19.99. The clever fingered design allows extra dexterity and they’re made with fabric fit for firefighters. For the more casual cook, the Leopard Oven Gloves from Hema are a bargain to bag. At just £4 a pair and looking stylish with it, they still offer ample protection for those of use who aren’t in the emergency services.
