McCarron, Sutherland co-leaders after second round of KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship – WNDU

Scott McCarron held the outright lead at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship for the majority of the day before Kevin Sutherland birdied four of his last five holes to become co-leader at -8.

The second round began with six players tied for the lead at -5.

McCarron was one of the six players before shooting a second round 68 to improve to -8, surpassing Tim Petrovic who was the early clubhouse leader at -7.

“For me, I’ve always kind of been a guy who enjoys playing off of the crowd,” said McCannon. “The more people coming out to watch us is better so I like being in the final group.”

McCarron remained on top of the leaderboard for the majority of the afternoon, and then six hours after McCarron finished, Kevin Sutherland went on to birdie four of his last five holes to join McCarron atop the leaderboard at -8.

“I really hit the ball well all day,” said Sutherland. “The difference was I had a few balls get closer to the hole and I made some putts on that side but on my first nine holes, with the exception of 10 that I made a mess of, I really had good birdie putts all day.”

McCarron and Sutherland won’t be too far ahead of the rest of the pack, as there are four players right on their heels at -7, including their third group member, Tim Petrovic.

“I’ve just been playing solid so I’m happy where I am going into the weekend and I think I got a shot at this thing if I can just keep playing the way I’m capable of playing,” said Petrovic.

McCarron, Sutherland and Petrovic will tee off at 11 a.m. Saturday off of the first tee.

The City Diner: Northeast Ohio’s best weekend brunches, breakfasts

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Our brunch and breakfast series continues as we check out The City Diner in Old Brooklyn. Here’s a look at what to expect:

Location + hours: 5109 Memphis Ave., in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood, 216-400-7529. Hours: 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant has its own parking lot.

Menu or buffet? Menu. (There’s a special Sunday brunch menu.)

What it’s about: There’s a counter plus more than two dozen booths and tables in the comfortable restaurant, which Ed Michalski opened less than a year ago. Black and white framed photos showcase various Cleveland landmarks and images – the skyline, Terminal Tower, bridges, Playhouse Square and others. A giant chalkboard by the television near the counter allows folks to jot their musings. The restaurant’s slogan: “Great Food, Great City.”

The eats: Of the 18 items on the Sunday brunch menu, all were under $10 with just a few exceptions. “Between the Bread” includes a Stoner Sandwich and Monte Cristo, and the Diner Stacks satiate the carb-loving sweet-tooth breakfast eaters: Banana Cream Dream Waffle, Strawberries ‘n Cream French Toast and Chocolate Chunk pancakes.

Don’t miss: City Iron Sizzlers. These skillets – your choice of three – come in a hot pan. We loved the Garden Vegetable – a pair of eggs how you want them, potato hash with a very crispy crust, roasted peppers, red onion jam, spinach, feta cheese and tomato. There’s also a C-Town with sausage and a Western with Black Forest Ham.

On the side: Homemade preserves. We were offered strawberry or apricot; both were delicious and definitely not a typical sugary jam for your toast.

The drinks: No liquor license means no Mimosas or Bloody Marys. But milkshakes, malts and floats are available, and the greatest word comes before the coffee: “Bottomless.”

Nearby: The City Diner sits on the busy commercial stretch of Memphis Avenue and is just a few blocks southwest from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Tuning in: We heard an assortment of oldies from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, including The Rolling Stones, Cyndi Lauper, Journey and The Marvelettes. (Though for some inexplicable reason, we heard the latter’s 1961 classic “Please Mr. Postman” four times on our visit.)

Volunteers get special surprise at KitchenAid Senior PGA – WNDU

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU)- Events like the KitchenAid Senior PGA don’t just happen on their own, they take months, often years to plan ahead to pull it off.

It takes about 1,700 volunteers to put on this tournament. About 80 percent of them are local and 500 are here for the fourth time the tournament has been in town.

Friday afternoon legendary Jack Nicklaus paid them a surprise and thanked all of them for their time and dedication to help host the event.

Everyone could be seen holding their phones up high to snap a picture of Nicklaus. Although he was here for only an hour or two, he wanted to be sure to stop by and say thank for everything that they’ve done.

“We’re very thankful for them always have been thankful for them, volunteers of golf,” Nicklaus said. “It’s the backbone of what we do.”

Nicklaus said many of them don’t even see a golf shot for days after being here because they love doing what they do to help. He said he’s extremely grateful for them.
