Fresh produce

In-season fruits and veggies not only taste better, but they’re cheaper, too.

June brings a fruit-heavy harvest, meaning “you can shop watermelons, strawberries, peaches, apricots, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers while they’re over 50 percent cheaper than their midwinter highs,” DealNews reports.

Gym memberships

Demand for gym memberships is low in June. With summer weather sprouting, people start heading outside to exercise. Plus, vacation season is kicking off and kids are out of school, making this time of year even slower for gyms.

Capitalize on the lull. Even if your local spot isn’t offering an official discount, chances are you can negotiate a lower membership fee this month.

Dinnerware

It’s officially wedding season and that means department stores will be competing to get you to buy your gifts from them. Expect hefty discounts on registry-friendly items, especially dinnerware.

“Macy’s should be top of your list for highly discounted sets, including designer pieces,” DealNews reports. “Last year it offered select Kate Spade dinnerware from just $7. You can also expect dinnerware and flatware specialist Oneida to host its best sale of the year this month, knocking a massive 35 percent off across the store.”

Lingerie

Typically, lingerie will set you back a lot, but you can score deals in June thanks to the Victoria’s Secret semi-annual sale, which typically lasts two to four weeks. According to DealNews, “you can expect to see bra prices drop to just $10, while panties and beauty items go as low as $4.”

And you won’t be limited to just Victoria’s Secret. Many other lingerie stores, like Bare Necessities and Frederick’s of Hollywood, follow suit this time of year.

Textbooks

If you know what reading material you’ll need during your next college semester, don’t wait until the fall to buy them. Prices are lowest right after students sell their copies back in June.

Tradition, Passion and Time Saving Innovation

A QA with Chef Luciano Delsignore

Chef Luciano Delsignore uses the KitchenAid Commercial countertop blender to make everything from peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut and puréed soups.

Q. Talk about your background and the importance of reliable kitchen equipment.

Chef Luciano Delsignore: I began my career working in the kitchen of my parents’ Italian restaurant, Fonte d’Amore in Livonia, Mich. Having spent summers in Abruzzo, Italy, where my parents were born and raised, I moved to Italy and trained in some of the best restaurants. After returning to the United States, where, at the time, most Italian restaurants had a heavy American influence, I convinced my father to remodel the family restaurant to provide an authentic Italian dining experience. Now, I own Bacco Ristorante, a fine-dining restaurant with an emphasis on inventive, contemporary dishes. I’m also the proprietor of Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina, a casual chain that serves authentic, Neapolitan-style, wood-fired pizzas. I credit my success to my European training, my passion for food and, of course, my reliable kitchen equipment.

Q. How important is equipment quality in terms of time savings?

A. It’s among the most important things we can have in a kitchen. We work in a business where stuff breaks – heating, cooling, plumbing – we have all those people on speed dial to keep us up and running. But our KitchenAid Commercial equipment is extremely reliable. Never having to worry about the functionality of our tabletop appliances is priceless to us. The stand mixer, the immersion blender and the countertop blender are the go-to, everyday pieces of equipment. We use them 10 to 20 times a day.

Q. Discuss the importance of time savings in the kitchen and how the KitchenAid Blender assists with that?

A. Any way we can save time without sacrificing quality, we win. The KitchenAid Commercial blender has become the chef’s best friend. It can puree anything from frozen peas to toasted nuts in a smooth puree in seconds. We have even ground farro and other whole grains into flour in the KitchenAid blender for pasta making! When executing an off-site dinner for 600 guests, we were able to make a delicious smooth airy Béarnaise sauce in a matter of minutes, also keeping it hot with the dual wall thermal container. The Coulis cycle on the Culinary blender also works great. We don’t have to take extra time to strain the sauce or soup after blending, it is so smooth!

Q. What makes KitchenAid Commercial appliances the ideal time savers?

The power and speed can “take down the smallest seeds possible and puree’s them entirely” says Chef Luciano Delsignore.

A. The design and ease of cleaning. Chefs can disassemble them quickly and be right back in business. We use the same bowls and blender jars again very quickly. We love that the immersion blender is all packed in this beautiful hard case. The parts go back together easily, so we aren’t missing pieces when you need them. We love the handle on the back of the tabletop blender. The orange, commercial-grade cord unplugs from the machine quickly, so we can move it to wherever we need to work. Everything about the design has been really thought out with the professional chef in mind.

Goodwill, Comprenew partner on electronics recycling

<!–
–>

MARQUETTE — Goodwill Industries is partnering with Comprenew, a Grand Rapids-based electronic recycling organization, to host an electronic recycling event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Marquette’s Municipal Service Center, at 1100 Wright St.

During this event, community members can drop off unwanted electronics, such as old cell phones, computers and computer accessories, small kitchen appliances, televisions and accessories free of charge. The only things that will not be accepted are large household appliances, such as washers and refrigerators, said Cori Bodeman, director of marketing for Goodwill of Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

“If it’s got a cord, we want it,” Bodeman said. “This event is 100 percent landfill divergent as we are landfill diversion experts.”

Goodwill Industries sells gently used items as one of the original forms of recycling goods and it is adding electronic recycling to its mission.

“This is a natural extension for us and its environmentally friendly,” she added.

Comprenew is an electronics recycler certified by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and nationally. The company has been able to extend its services to the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin through partnerships with Goodwill.

This electronic recycling drop-off event will continue throughout the summer then will become a permanent service at Goodwill, Bodeman said. She adds that recycling will still be free of charge, except for a nominal fee to recycle televisions.

All donated materials will be recycled from Saturday’s event. After the summer drop-off events conclude, Goodwill will begin refurbishing donated computers to sell at a low cost for those who can’t afford to purchase new, Bodeman said.

In addition to Comprenew, this event is also in partnership with Superior Watershed Partnership and DEQ.

Goodwill is looking for volunteers for this event and a full list of accepted goods can be found at www.goodwillnorth.org.

What To Buy In June, & What To Avoid, Because You’re All About Stretching That Dollar

Everyone loves scoring a good deal but not everyone is down with clipping coupons. Fortunately, there are other ways to score massive savings, like paying attention to the calendar. Certain months are better than others for buying specific items — you just need to be a savvy shopper. We’ve rounded up the best and worst things you should buy in June. And to start your summer shopping adventures off strong, pick up a free donut for National Donut Day on Friday, June 1. Everything tastes better when it’s free, right?

So what other items are going to be discounted this June? The experts over at DealNews are total pros at identifying the best items to buy when, and according to their research, June is the month to stock up on things like underwear and lingerie, movie tickets, and dinnerware. It also happens to be the worst time to spend money on things like back to school electronics, gas, and summer clothes. It may all sound a bit random but there are actually some serious market insights that can explain why stores put certain items on sale during specific times of the year. I love a good deal so let’s get into it.

Buy: Lingerie, Movie Tickets, And Dinnerware

If you’re like me, you might be wondering why bra and panty prices get slashed at the start of summer. It largely has to do with the huge semi-annual sale Victoria’s Secret has every June. “While many other lingerie providers might have already followed the mid-year sale structure, Victoria’s Secret has certainly defined it as a time to save on undergarments; as a result, the competition has to follow suite if they weren’t already,” explained Lindsay Sakraida, Director of Content Marketing of DealNews.
