Narrativ’s SmartLinks platform monetizes product links with the help of AI

As Facebook’s algorithmic News Feed changes depress referral traffic and advertising continues on a slow decline, publishers are pursuing out-of-the-box strategies to make up for revenue shortfalls. The New York Times, for example, is trying to entice would-be subscribers with expanded digital food and crossword puzzle sections. And BuzzFeed, building on its past product development efforts, is marketing Tasty-branded kitchen accessories in Walmart stores.

Digital commerce is another area of intense interest for media companies, and it’s no mystery why. Shopify projects that worldwide retail revenue will rise from $481.2 billion in 2018 to $712.9 billion by 2022, and that in two years, the number of potential customers will hit more than 1.2 billion.

That’s where Shirley Chen, CEO and founder of machine learning and e-commerce startup Narrativ, saw an opportunity.

Narrativ, which is based in New York City and launched out of stealth just over a year ago, in August 2017, optimizes links to product pages in publishers’ buying guides, feature articles, reviews, and news items. Much like Skimlinks and other affiliate marketing networks, it operates on a revenue share business model. But unlike Skimlinks, Narrativ adds an intelligent, dynamic layer to links that affords retailers far more customizability than a run-of-the-mill buy button.

“We saw that the relationship between large publishers and large retailers wasn’t being optimized,” Chen told VentureBeat in a phone interview. “The links that were being directed toward retailer sites were often broken and didn’t reflect accurate information. Products go on sale or change all the time.”

That’s where Narrativ’s SmartLink technology comes in. For publishers, it’s a hands-free affair: the system automatically ingests the product links in articles and extracts structured data from them. Then, with the help of artificial intelligence, it compares the corpus to product data from retailer feeds, ranks the product listings according to availability, price, and bids (more on those later), and creates a container — the aforementioned SmartLink.

Narrativ’s tech is smart enough to detect 404 errors — those pages you see when at the end of a broken link. And it integrates seamlessly with popular content management platforms like WordPress.

“We’re not just wrapping links,” Chen said. “We’re able to improve the user experience … [by] adding consumer value.”

As Chen explained, an increasing percentage of publishers’ traffic comes from search engine optimized (SEO) stories — articles that rank highly in Google Search, Microsoft’s Bing, and other search engines. But as those articles age, the links to product pages inevitably break, which doesn’t make for the best user experience.

“Not sending readers to out-of-stock or 404 pages builds ready loyalty,” she said. “We’ve restored more than a billion links.”

Partly as a result, publishers who’ve integrated Narrativ’s technology — including Allure, Vogue, and NYMage — have seen a 250 percent uplift in earnings.

Readers aren’t the only ones who benefit. On the retailer side of the equation, brands bid for clicks in real time, and they’re able to target users by the amount of exposure they’ve had to a brand or product and run campaigns on units like product galleries and carousels.

The numbers speak for themselves. Narrativ drove $57 million in e-commerce revenue, and retail partners like Target-owned Dermstore saw 685 percent year-over-year growth and a 67 percent return on investment.

To date, Narrativ has raised $3.5 million in funding. This week, it was awarded as a technology pioneer by the World Economic Forum.

What Love Looks Like For Pansexuals

On April 26, 2018, hundreds, maybe thousands, of people flocked to the internet to look up one thing: What, exactly, does pansexual mean? Following Janelle Monáe’s coming out in an interview with Rolling Stone, Merriam-Webster reported that searches for the term went up 11,000 percent (!!!). The portion of the LGBTQIA+ alphabet usually unacknowledged was finally making headlines, and people were attempting to get to know the community that exists past the plus symbol. 

Merriam-Webster defines pansexuality as “of, relating to, or characterized by sexual desire or attraction that is not limited to people of a particular gender identity or sexual orientation.” Ask actual self-identifying pansexuals what the term means to them, and it might differ slightly. Eighteen-year-old Sophia’s definition is pretty parallel to the dictionary’s though: “attraction to other people, regardless of their gender.” Courtney, 26, has a similar interpretation, adding that “some pansexuals feel they are gender blind.” Olivia, 21, has a more personal answer, defining it as “love and interest based on personality, not gender or sexual organs.” She can be attracted to anyone, she says, and pursue something romantic as long as the other person is interested. 

What pansexuality definitely isn’t is “deluxe bisexuality,” as Sophia says she’s heard it being described before. It’s a confusing concept for some to grasp but here’s the deal: Bisexual means you’re attracted to two sexes, male and female, while pansexual is all-encompassing. Olivia says people commonly mix up the two, likely because pansexuality hasn’t received as much visibility in media. “There’s a whole spectrum of identities that are often not portrayed on TV, so when people see a cis woman dating a cis woman and then subsequently dating a cis man, in their heads, it makes sense to say, ‘They like two genders, so they are bisexual.’” That also brings up the other issue, she says, which is that “many people are still stuck thinking there are only two genders, so they see no reason to differentiate between bisexuality and pansexuality.” 

Things are starting to shift though ever so slightly. Monáe’s coming out definitely helped. Miley Cyrus was one of the first celebrities to publicly identify as pansexual in 2015. Then, also this year, Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jonathan Kasdan stated that Donald Glover’s character is pansexual, though it’s not said or even really hinted at outright in the movie (which many saw as queerbaiting). Glover said about his characters sexual orientation: “How can you not be pansexual in space? There are so many things to have sex with…Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody.” Which leads us to our next misconception about pansexuals: They want to have sex with everybody.

“I guess the most frustrating thing is people assuming I’m polyamorous when I’m in monogamous relationships,” Olivia says. “Although I have had open relationships, which was a beautiful thing, it all goes back to people assuming people who are pansexual only care about sex, which is not how I am. Sex is good, but it’s not the only thing that matters.” Basically, pansexual does not automatically equal promiscuous. In fact, everyone I spoke to has had, as Sophia puts it, pretty sparse love lives; they’ve either been in serious relationships or date occasionally. There are no wild orgies going on with this group (not that there’s anything wrong with that), just lots of love. “It shouldn’t matter if I want just sex, but that’s not what it is, I just love who I love,” says Olivia. “And I think that gives me so much opportunity and purity within love. I don’t ever feel limited or confined… I just get to love who I love and pursue happiness, which I think other people may get stuck on.” 

According to GLAAD’s 2017 Accelerating Acceptance report, millennials are the most gender- and sexually fluid generation ever. As awareness grows, people are discovering that they might not fit into one box or the other. They’re figuring out parts of themselves that might have been indescribable before; they’re discovering their true selves and the freedom that comes along with that. With more celebrities and non-celebrities alike coming out as pansexual, that awareness will grow even more, as will the acceptance. “Before, if you asked someone what pansexuality was, they’d either say they don’t know, be confused, give you the definition for bisexuality, or make a joke about having sex with pans and cookware,” Sophie reflects. “It being more mainstream means that people actually know what it is, and pan people will finally get more recognition outside of the internet and LGBT+ only social circles. It will also mean that more people who are pan but didn’t know how to label it will finally have a way to describe themselves and have a community they can be a part of.” 

Love is love is love, after all.

This top-rated cast iron pan comes pre-seasoned (and is just $15)

Cast iron pans sure can seem intimidating — seasoning the heavy skillet can feel like a tricky process. So what can you do if you’ve been hesitant to give them a chance?

The pan has a 4.4-star rating with 9,387 reviews on Amazon. And, aside from being a bargain, Lodge’s cast iron pans have been made in Tennessee since 1896. We also once tried the brand’s popular cast iron dutch oven loved it.

So, naturally, we wondered: Does the Lodge pre-seasoned cast iron pan live up to the hype? Admittedly, I had procrastinated switching over to cast iron myself, but now, I’m a believer.

It is virtually non-stick out of the box.

What does pre-seasoned mean? Well, traditionally, before using a cast-iron skillet, you’d have to wash it, dry it, coat it in vegetable oil, and bake it for an hour upside-down for an hour. This is known as seasoning.

With pre-seasoned cast iron skillets, though, they add coat the pan in vegetable oil at the factory, and it goes through high-temperature commercial ovens that allow the oil to deeply seep into the iron — essentially jump-starting the whole process.

It usually takes a while to get a cast-iron pan to the point where it’s nonstick, so I was skeptical that Lodge’s would be that way off the bat. Lodge says it comes “seasoned and ready to use,” so I used it — and I was shocked when I made cornbread, and then steak, and then fried eggs. It all slid effortlessly out of the pan, no sticking.

It browned food beautifully.

My cornbread came out like the rustic version of my dreams — crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. And the steak browned so beautifully, guests asked how I made it (Seared for four minutes on each side on medium-high, then finished it by moving the whole pan into the oven at 350˚ for five minutes).

The pan gets really hot

This actually takes getting used to. The pan gets hot quickly and really holds the heat! So, you may need to lower the heat a tiny bit from what you’d use on other pans.

You can use metal tools on it

Metal spatulas, tongs, knives: Bring it on! Cast iron is virtually indestructible. And, because there’s no chemical nonstick coating, you won’t damage the surface by using metal tools on it. (It also works on all stovetops — electric, gas, induction — as well as open fires and grills.)

Cleaning it is easy

Aside from seasoning a cast-iron pan, people are also scared of cleaning them. As was I, until I learned that it’s easy: You fill it with water, scrub with a plastic bristle brush, dry immediately — that’s the important part, to prevent rusting — and then wipe with some oil-soaked paper towel. That’s it!

For one stubborn spot that wouldn’t come clean, I added some salt, scrubbed with it, and amazingly, that worked.

A silicone handle cover is a good idea.

Again, this pan holds heat, and it’s all one forged piece of iron — so the handle gets hot. If you think you might slip up and grab it, consider investing in a cheap silicone handle cover so you don’t need to use an oven mitt.

It gets better with every use

Even though the eggs slid right out of the pan, out of the box, the skillet does get noticeably better with each use. So keep on using it, and swiping it with oil after you clean it, and you’ll have one of those heirloom cast-iron pans, at last, in no time.
