Amazon Prime Day Is Coming. Here’s What You Need to Know.

Amazon Prime Day 2018 is fast approaching. Starting at 3 PM ET July 16 and running all day July 17, the 36-hour bonanza will feature discounts comparable to those traditionally only seen on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The one catch? You have to be a Prime member to shop the sales. (If you aren’t one already, you can sign up here.)

Like all highly anticipated sales events, there’s a lot of secrecy surrounding the actual deals that’ll be available. If past years are any indication, we can expect deep discounts on Instant Pots (in 2016, Amazon sold 215,000 Instant Pots on Prime Day) and hot ticket kitchen products like espresso machines and Le Creuset cookware. Luckily, Amazon has already started releasing a few deals—read on for how to prepare for Prime Day and what you can buy now. And don’t forget to keep checking back as we get closer to The Big Day.

Early Deals

Amazon Pantry Subscription

From July 3 through July 17, sign up for a 30-day free trial of Prime Pantry and get $10 off a $40 order, plus free delivery. Prime Pantry lets you order everyday kitchen and household items like cereal, peanut butter, paper towels—basically anything that doesn’t require refrigeration before opening—in normal, non-bulk sizes. Instead of buying these items individually at the store, you can fill up a Prime Pantry box that’s delivered straight to you. It’s best for people who don’t have the storage space to buy in bulk but don’t want to make routine trips to the store.

AmazonFresh Subscription

Also through July 17, you can start a free trial of AmazonFresh and get $30 off your first order with the code 30FRESH. (Existing customers can also get the discount using the promo code.) Fresh is Amazon’s grocery delivery service, which, aside from all the usual supermarket items, includes Whole Foods items and Martha Marley Spoon meal kits. Note: Fresh delivery is currently only available in Seattle, Northern California, Southern California, New York, and Philadelphia areas.

How to get the best deals

Make sure you’re a Prime member

We said it once and we’ll say it again: you can only take advantage of Prime Day deals if you’re an Amazon Prime member. If you aren’t one already (or if you aren’t already using some random family member’s log-in info), sign up here for a 1-month free trial.

Set up alerts for specific products

There are going to be a lot of discounts, some great, others not so much, to sift through on Prime Day. If you have your eyes on a particular product (hello, beautiful waffle iron), set a deal alert for it. You can do so via desktop by adding the item to your shopping cart and clicking “save for later.” Amazon will notify you if the price changes. If you want instant notifications, download the Amazon Shopping app.
