Ask Ann: 5 tips for making best use of closets

Maybe your home is just like mine. Your guests compliment you on how great it looks, but you know what’s hidden behind closed doors. Most days we rush to put away items in our closet, garage and pantry to make our house look neat. And after a while, these storage places get cluttered and crammed full of too much stuff.

Until a couple of weeks ago, my closets and kitchen pantry looked like they had survived a tornado. I was so frustrated that it finally pushed me into the organizational mode. The result was an experience so refreshing that I wanted to share some tips on closet storage that might inspire you to reorganize your space and remove the clutter.

There are many types of closet organizing systems and accessories available, ranging from plastic to wire metal to wood. If you’re handy, you can install most yourself. The more elaborate systems may require a professional or contractor.

If you are building or purchasing a new home with a walk-in closet, talk with your builder or seek advice from a closet system manufacturer to make the right choice. It’s easy to spend a thousand dollars on even a modest system, but it will maximize the use of your space.

Find the less expensive systems at a big-box retailer. You can install these yourself. It might be a good idea to first complete a layout of your existing closet space with appropriate measurements. Ask your local do-it-yourself supplier to help create your new closet layout on paper before you buy the materials.

No matter what your budget or system, consider these helpful hints when designing your space:

Shelving: Adding extra shelving is an excellent way to make use of space. Many find that adding shelving allows them to store more items or help them better organize clothing and linens. You can use freestanding shelving, install wire shelving or use other shelving units that help you make the best use of space.

Clear storage boxes: Using clear boxes helps keep things neat and organized — and visible. Using clear storage boxes will help you know exactly what the contents are, allowing easy access to any items inside.

Storage cubes: Storage cubes are a sleek way to store items such as shoes or other things that fit inside the cubes. They can be great for storing toys or school materials.

Shoe organizers: Most people have at least three or more pairs of shoes, and many have dozens. Whether you designate a shoe closet or invest in a shoe organizer that fits into your closet, it can help reduce clutter.

Tie/belt hangers: Do you have a lot of ties, belts or scarves? A tie or belt hanger can make it easy to store your items and find what you need without taking up a lot of space.
