Bella’s opens in Thomasville

THOMASVILLE — Amy Tournas has worked in the restaurant business all her life.

Her husband, Kostas, worked at his uncle’s restaurant for several years. The couple also previously ran the Kostas Family Restaurant in Archdale, which closed in 2011.

So when a space became available, the veteran restaurant workers jumped at the chance to open Bella’s Family Restaurant at 1322 National Highway in Thomasville.

“We had just been looking around for a good location,” Amy said. “And our friend, Salvator Loos, who owns this building, had said it was available and asked if we wanted to lease it. We knew what we wanted to do when we opened another restaurant. We wanted a really warm atmosphere. We wanted to give all the old favorites that everyone is used to with some newer things too.”

Bella’s officially opened Nov. 13. Currently, the hours are 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. However, Amy said the hours will extend to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday after Jan. 1.

The restaurant offers a variety of dishes, including pork chops, steak, seafood, hamburgers, sandwiches, subs, salads, soup and pasta. Bella’s also has a full service coffee and dessert bar and a banquet room that seats more than 40 people. The breakfast menu includes sausage, ham, biscuits and gravy, omelets, skillets, pancakes and other items.

The name Bella comes from the granddaughter of their business partner, Marsha Siler.

Amy said the point of being in the restaurant business is to provide a service that puts a smile on people’s faces when they leave.

She and Kostas hope to make people happy and give them a good experience at Bella’s.

“It’s in our soul to do this type of thing,” Amy said. “If you don’t love it, you’ll never make it. It’s like being married — you eat it, you breathe it and you go home with it. You wake up with it. It’s always there.”
