Chico shops may have just the Christmas gift you’re looking for – Chico Enterprise

Chico In an increasingly online retail world, there is still demand for a shopping experience in brick-and-mortar stores during the holidays.

Though sales may be mostly made online this year, the National Retail Association is projecting a 4 percent increase in holiday sales up from 2016. The economy is looking good — unemployment is low and consumer confidence is up.

There are plenty of gems to be found in local businesses, so consider stopping in.

Of course there are many more noteworthy stores in Chico that didn’t make it on the list below, but we’ve broken it down into three categories for the purpose of this story: places primarily providing gifts, as well as shops that focus in cards and stationary and toys and hobbies.

Gift shops

Made in Chico

Filled with goodies made by local artists or local companies, from Chico Bags to jewelry, woodwork and lots more.

127 West 3rd St. in downtown

Open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Bird in Hand

Cross off several on the list at this classic Chico store with an array of games, yo-yos, puzzles, bath and body products and kitchen accessories.

320 Broadway in downtown

Extended hours for Christmas: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, then 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Dec. 23. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Little Red Hen Gift Shop

Stuffed animals, sculptures, garden art, home decor and bath and beauty products can be found here. Little Red Hen stores employ adults with developmental disabilities and all profits go toward programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends.

Tomfoolery

As the name suggests, gag gifts abound. There are also quality leather goods, hats and accessories for the traveler in your life.

Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hubbs and Co.

Expect bath and body products, home decor and other Christmassy finds.

956 Mangrove Ave.

Open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and Closed Sundays.

Christian and Johnson

Beyond beautiful floral arrangements, home decor and seasonal items are ripe for picking. This shop began as a nursery which was opened in 1907 by one of Annie Bidwell’s gardeners.

Open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

Zucchini and Vine

A good place to look for classy diningware for the entertainer and gadgets for the home chef. Cooking books, teas and gift-worthy fine foods are also sprinkled in.

204 Main St. in downtown

Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and closed Sundays.

Cards and stationary

Wild Ink Press

This delightful storefront has handmade cards for every occasion as well as stationary and small gifts. If you are lucky, you might catch staff in action at the printing presses.

Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.

Magna Carta

This Chico gem is known for its paper goods as well as gifts like wallets, jewelry and notebooks.

Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Toys and hobbies

AMain Hobbies

For the kid (or inner kid) who loves remote toys and gizmos, this local business has an impressive selection of cars, airplanes, boats and of course, drones.

2065 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway

Open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday-Sunday.

BaT Comics and Games

Sift through comics, manga and card and board games. You may also find the perfect gift for a big fan in the form of a poster, T-shirt — or, to be extremely specific, an arm signed by author Chuck Palahnuik.

Open noon to 6 p.m. Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
