Demand drives ‘hiring blitz’ at Whirlpool Amana

Chris Rice is calling what Whirlpool Amana is about to undertake a “hiring blitz.”

The facility, already easily Iowa County’s largest employer, is about to add 500 employees in the coming weeks, thanks to increased demand for the company’s premium-line bottom-mount refrigerator-freezers assembled at the plant.

Rice, the human resources director at the Amana facility, said last week that the company, with operations in Middle Amana, is adding a third shift to one of its main production lines. The workers will fill full-time positions with wages starting at $15 per hour.

The new hiring initiative is expected to bring the plant’s employment to about 3,200 workers by the end of 2017.

Jobs range from assembly line workers to specialized duties, including brazers (or welders), foam plastic setup operators and team leaders.

“That alone will account for more than 500 of the openings we’re trying to fill,” said Rice. “We’ve had a strong product demand, and that’s a great thing to have as a business.”

The Amana facility specializes solely in the bottom-mount refrigerators, where the bottom drawer serves as the freezer. The refrigerator units made at the plant come in 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-door configurations. More than 5,000 units can be assembled per day, and come in the Amana, Maytag and Whirlpool brands, as well as the premium Jenn-Air and KitchenAid brands.

Rice said all premium-style refrigerators, including those of Whirlpool Corp.’s competitors, sell well. New technologies are helping drive part of the demand.

“It’s a market that continues to grow,” he said. “We’re seeing strong demand and we see that continuing for the next several years. We need more people to build the same number (of refrigerators) … and we’ve decided to make focused effort to fill the positions as fast as possible.”

Brian Crowe, executive director of the Iowa County Economic Development Commission, viewed the news with excitement.

“Whirlpool Amana is one of the largest employers in eastern Iowa,” he said. “Their continued growth in Iowa County is great news for many area manufacturers, trucking companies and service providers.”
