Design stunners from trade show – The San Diego Union

Design Construction Week is the Super Bowl, Oscars and Fashion Week of the residential design world, all wrapped up in three hectic trade show days. It’s the Kitchen Bath Industry Show paired with the International Builders Show and a home technology CEDIA pavilion. This year’s event, last month in Orlando, Fla., included 85,000 designers, builders, contractors and retailers ogling the latest releases at 2,100 exhibitor booths.

Many of the best-known brands from your neighborhood home center and designer showrooms bring their new products and attract big crowds, but some of the most interesting items come from tiny firms you probably never heard of. The beauty of an event like this is the opportunity to discover great new gear, whatever its source!

These products embody some of the top trends seen at the show, like wellness design, embodied in the chef sinks, vanities for wheelchair users, and spa-style shower column; technology, especially voice control, seen in a new kitchen faucet from Kohler’s new Konnect series; the growth of outdoor kitchens, and the desire for simpler style and practicality, as affordably presented by a tiny company revolutionizing air vents, an organizing mainstay giving the lazy susan new life, and a luxury offering of stunning wood credenza hiding a bathroom vanity.

Here are nine items shown at Design Construction Week that might work well in your home this year.
