Making a gift for her young grandchildren, Sandy Hotop, of the Village of Santo Domingo, adds the detailed outline to the jolly elf’s beard Dec. 7, during the China porcelain painting club’s weekly meeting. Hotop has been painting for about a year and a half and is one 17 members in the club. The ancient art form is practiced at the Chula Vista Recreation Center Thursdays from 12:30 until 5 p.m. and is open to any skill level.

Centuries ago, Chinese masters transformed durable dinnerware into works of art on porcelain. Now, members of the Porcelain Painting Club are mastering this ancient art technique to turn cups, saucers, plates, even mirrors into works they can call their own. And they are having loads of fun doing it. “There’s no stress because we don’t criticize,” said Joanne Kornfeld, who’s been painting with the group for more than 10 years. “We only show them how do it better.” What goes on the blank “canvas” of white porcelain is only limited by the painter’s imagination.
