Empire Bath & Kitchen relocating from Utica to Marcy

UTICA — After more than 30 years in downtown Utica, Empire Bath Kitchen is leaving.

The business will open in a new location in the Marcy Towne Center on Jan. 2, said owner Cindy Miller. The Utica location, at 600 State St., is scheduled to close at the end of December.

Miller, who has been with Empire Bath Kitchen in some capacity for 31 years, said a mix of factors contributed to her decision, including plans for the new hospital downtown. With her lease set to expire, Miller said she deliberated her decision for several months.

“When I purchased (the business) in ’08, we had a lease for 10 years,” she said. “Do I stay? Do I buy the building? Do I risk the hospital construction? How is it going to impact my business?”

The designed campus for the planned downtown hospital includes parts of State, Columbia and Lafayette streets. Empire Bath Kitchen falls outside of that area, but Miller said she is concerned with the impact the construction could have on her business.

She lived through the noise and slowed business, she said, when the Arterial bridge was constructed and installed behind her building. And as the hospital plans cover an area that includes other businesses like Urbanik’s Paints, Miller said she was concerned with being the only retail along that block.

“My risks were higher there than they were just picking up and leaving,” she said.

Empire Bath Kitchen will have a warehouse sale on leftover older stock and kitchen equipment before it moves.

Miller said she is looking forward to increased visibility in Marcy, where her business will be located near the intersection of Cavanaugh and River roads.

“You don’t know what it’s like to have to decide what you’re going to do with something so big,” she said. “It’s a big project to have to do.”
