Food poisoning: Using a copper pan while cooking can be toxic …

“When copper and copper alloy surfaces contact acidic foods, copper may be leached into the food.”

This is because acidic foods react with copper, causing it to dissolve into food.

Examples of acidic foods include tomatoes, fish, processed meats, grains and citrus fruits -including the lime juice used in Moscow Mules.

While the bulletin focuses on copper cups, there have also been concerns with copper pots and pans used for cooking.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that acidic foods can cause copper on unprotected cookware to dissolve into foods.
