Gabe’s Family Restaurant: Northeast Ohio’s best weekend brunches, breakfasts

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Our brunch and breakfast series continues as we check out Gabe’s Family Restaurant this week. Here’s a look at what to expect:

Location + hours: Gabe’s is at 2044 Broadview Road, Cleveland. Open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. It’s at the northeast corner of Spring and Broadview roads and has been open 14 years, our affable server Nicole told us. It has its own parking lot.

Menu or buffet? Menu.

Ambiance: The decor is one steeped in pride – for sports teams, for its neighborhood, for its city. An Old Brooklyn flag hangs along with shots of Progressive Field, artwork of former Browns quarterback Brian Sipe and the skyline.

Classic: There’s a “no smoking section” sign, for old time’s sake. And you have to love the “Louie Catania: Don’t stay in jail, call Louie for your bail” ad.

The eats: Breakfast items are under $8. (Specials included a tempting and unique dish of breakfast nachos.) The menu is extensive, with more than 50 items including multiple variations on hot cakes and French Toast as well as skillets and omelettes.

Don’t miss: Several variations on French Toast. We chose cranberry and walnut, with the berries and nuts mixed in the batter. The bread came out dense and delicious.

Nice touch: Syrup is served in a hot squeeze bottle. It stayed warm throughout our breakfast.

Presidential placemat: While you wait for your meal the placemat will make your dining experience a bit educational. I did not feel any guilt eating a side order of biscuits and gravy (tasty but not spicy) as Herbert Hoover‘s beady little eyes stared at me.
