Gainesville: Texas town is a relaxing weekend getaway blessedly close to home

Wine tasting is hitting its stride in the area, too, with a mini-boom in Red River Valley vineyards. Arché Vineyard Winery and Blue Ostrich Winery Vineyard, both just outside of the town of Saint Jo and close to Gainesville, are drawing plenty of weekend wine lovers to their tasting rooms.

But the best views, setting and selection are now found just outside of Muenster at 4R Ranch Vineyards Winery. Owned and developed by Dallas attorney Walt Roper and his family, 4R recently opened Wind Shed Tasting Room high on a ridge overlooking the sprawling family ranch and Red River Valley beyond. The deck provides 270-degree views of the chinquapin oak-covered landscape, a perfect place to sip varietals crafted by sommelier-turned-winemaker Willem Johnson. Our favorites include the estate viognier, among whites, and the Hoof und Hund, a full-bodied red blending Lenoir and grenache grapes, perfect for pairing with brisket, venison and rib-eyes (1473 County Road 477, Muenster).
