The Lake Lorraine has a new incoming tenant.

Kirkland’s, a home decor and gifts retailer, is bound for the Shoppes at Lake Lorraine in the multi-use development just west of Interstate 29 between 26th and 41st streets.

“Kirkland’s has leased 10,000 square feet, which is currently under construction,” said Mike Van Buskirk, director of operations for Van Buskirk Companies, in a news release. “It’s always exciting when you have the opportunity to introduce a brand new retailer to the market and Lake Lorraine is just a great spot for them to be.”

Kirkland’s offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor furniture, art and wall decor, lighting, pillows, rugs, curtains, kitchen accessories, gifts and seasonal merchandise.

Kirkland’s, which is headquartered in the Nashville area, was founded in 1966 and has 409 stores in 36 states. The Lake Lorraine location would be the first South Dakota store for Kirkland’s.

In its latest annual report to shareholders, Kirkland’s said its business concept supported growth to 500 stores, but would likely experience a slower growth rate as it focuses on website sales, stores in high-density markets and store relocations.

Kirkland’s is the latest of a string of retailers eager for a spot in the booming area under development by Van Buskirk Companies and Friessen Development. The Shoppes at Lake Lorraine include a number of now-open retailers including Hobby Lobby, Ross Dress for Less, Carter’s/OshKosh, HomeGoods and Marshalls. Those stores opened in October.

Van Buskirk Construction is wrapping up work on the DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse location, which is expected to open next spring.

Leasing continues on new retail buildings south of The Shoppes at Lake Lorraine, which dominates the northeast corner of the development. That area will have space for more than 102,000 square feet of specialty shops, lakeside dining and an Aloft Hotel.

When completed, the Lake Lorraine development will feature national retailers, small shops, corporate headquarters, office space, a retirement community and condos, all centered on Lake Lorraine.
