Inside JCPenney’s and Peers’ Strategic Holiday Sales Initiatives …

Seasonal employment

Department stores and retailers are taking serious initiatives to gear up for the crucial 2017 holiday season. JCPenney (JCP) plans to hire 40,000 employees for this holiday season, while Macy’s (M) plans to hire about 80,000 seasonal associates at its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, call centers, distribution centers, and online fulfillment centers, to cater to the growing traffic during the holiday season.

According to the National Retail Federation, retailers are expected to hire 500,000–550,000 temporary workers this holiday season. This estimate range indicates a decline in the holiday seasonal employment from last year’s 575,000.

Strategic initiatives

Department stores are expanding their merchandise offerings to boost holiday sales in 2017. On October 12, Kohl’s (KSS) announced that it will be enhancing its toys assortment with additional popular brands and products. Some of the exclusive toys collection at Kohl’s include Fisher-Price Imaginext DC Superfriends Batcave, Star Wars Episode 8 Figure 4-Pack, PJ Masks Deluxe Headquarters Play Set, Hot Wheels Step2 Road Rally Deluxe Raceway, and Barbie Dolphin Magic Ocean View Boat.

On October 10, JCPenney announced the launch of Tracee Ellis Ross for JCPenney holiday collection. This collection, which will be available beginning November 12, will include women’s apparel, accessories, and home decor items.

In collaboration with Electrolux Home Appliances, JCPenney has announced the launch of Frigidaire kitchen appliances effective October 1 in about 600 of its JCPenney appliance showrooms and on JCPenney.com. The company also launched a new collection of cookware and bakeware by chef and Food Network personality Ayesha Curry to enhance its offerings of kitchen products.
