JCPenney adds appliances to store

The continuing success of the JCPenney in Golden East Crossing mall over the years has led the department store chain to add big ticket appliances inside the local store.

The Rocky Mount JCPenney was one of 100 stores nationwide last month to receive a major appliance department to sell kitchen and laundry appliances. Sarah Holland, corporate communications and public relations manager for JCPenney, said the company wants to continue the momentum from the previous year.

“As millennials enter the real estate market and a rising number of homeowners invest in updating their homes, JCPenney introduced a leading assortment of major appliances in 500 stores last year,” Holland said. “It has been so successful that the company decided to add additional locations, including right here in Rocky Mount.”

Nona Kay Davis, general manager of the Rocky Mount JCPenney, said the store has renovated its home department to accomodate a 1,000-square-foot major appliance showroom, featuring 19 washer and dryers sets, eight refrigerators, seven ranges and five dishwashers from brand names, including Samsung, LG, GE and Hotpoint. There are also more than 1,200 appliance models available online, Davis added.

“This is really a big boost to Rocky Mount, and we offer one of the best service warranty protection plans in the industry,” Davis said. “Customers can feel confident they’re getting a great price on major appliances at JCPenney because we offer no-interest financing, free delivery and a price-match guarantee. At other retailers, it’s usually a choice of one incentive or other.”

Earlier this year, JCPenney announced it plans to close 138 stores across the country this year, including the JCPenney in Roanoke Rapids. In 2015, the JCPenney’s in Wilson closed.

However, the Rocky Mount JCPenney has held strong in sales. Davis said the local JCPenney, which employs 65 workers, was ranked No. 1 in sales last year in JCPenney’s Southeast region, which consists of 159 stores. Overall, the Rocky Mount JCPenney ranked no. 12 in sales out of more than 1,100 JCPenney stores a year ago. Davis said the closing of the Bed Bath Beyond has increased the store’s home department sales.

The local store, which was recently repainted, also cleared out a more than 1,000-square-foot space last year with the addition of Sephora, a popular French cosmetic store offering top-of-the-line makeup, perfumes, beauty and skin-care products. The company also upgraded the Rocky Mount JCPenney’s center core to feature more jewelry, accessories and new fixtures to give it a modern look, Davis said.

“With the company investment in us over the years, it just reinforced the fact that we are here to stay,” she said. “When you see other businesses in the mall that have gone out, it’s good to know we’ve been able to strive. With the addition of our major applicances, this gives people another great reason to shop with us.”
