Johnel’s offers diverse menu in Hammond

Whether visiting Johnel’s restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner, diners won’t be disappointed with the culinary selections offered on the large menu.

Johnel’s, located off Calumet Avenue in the complex that also features Dynasty Banquets and the Ramada Hotel, features a menu with everything from traditional breakfast fare to specialty burgers, sandwiches, dinner combination plates and assorted desserts made in house.

The decor in Johnel’s is warm and inviting and features American-themed decorations. There’s even a small replica of the Statue of Liberty standing outside the restaurant and a few American flags decorating the exterior of the building.

Once indoors, guests will feel as though they’ve stepped into the warm atmosphere of someone’s home. Servers are friendly and often visit the tables to check on diners.

We visited Johnel’s on a recent Sunday morning. The restaurant was filled with the after-church crowd who gathered with families and groups of friends to enjoy one of the eatery’s hearty breakfasts.

Diners also may order non-breakfast items all day at the restaurant.

After perusing the menu, we decided to try a few items. We chose the Cheese Omelet ($5.35) and the Athenian Chicken entree ($12.95).

Both received praise at our table. The omelet was a hearty helping served with hash browns. The Athenian Chicken (which takes about 20 minutes to prepare) proved to be a flavorful Greek-inspired recipe featuring half of a chicken cooked in lemon, olive oil and Greek herbs. Diners have a choice of potato with an order of Athenian Chicken. We chose the Greek potatoes, which were prepared with Greek seasonings as well.

A salad with homemade Creamy Garlic dressing and a dessert (our choice of Coconut Cream pie) accompanied the chicken entree.

Among other dishes featured on the menu at Johnel’s are various breakfast items from eggs, waffles and skillets to pancakes and French toast. Lunch and dinner items include Julienne Salad ($9.25); Cold Salmon Plate ($8.95); Beef and Swiss Club ($8.25); a Bacon Bleu Burger ($9.85); Turkey Bacon Wrap ($9.95); New Zealand Orange Roughy ($17.95); Chicken Piccatta ($13.95); Shrimp Stir Fry ($12.95); Vineyard Chicken $13.95);  Greek Steak ($19.95); Baby Back Ribs ($20.95 for a full slab); and much more.

Johnel’s also features daily specials. Call the restaurant to inquire about the specials menu.
