Homes with beautiful, warm and homey kitchens are somehow more memorable than those with distinguished living areas. Perhaps this is mainly because a lot about a homeowner is revealed by the kitchen design he or she prefers. When you walk into someone’s kitchen, you also walk into the life of its owner. Notice how some of the most engaging hosts who’ve received us have made it a part of their entertaining repertoire to share a drink or two inside their kitchens. There is immediate ease and sense of familiarity when a host lets you into their kitchens.

It’s because of this attention to this part of an abode, considered as the heart of a home, that homeowners are paying more attention to making a strong style statement in their kitchens. Home design aficionados are particularly drawn to retro inspired appliances when it comes to dressing this part of the home. Not only do they bring one back to a golden time and age, they also make for stand out, conversation pieces.

The story of Big Chill retro fridges begins with a homeowner’s search for pieces in his home that would add a unique 50s vibe to his private space . Founder Thom Vernon was then building a beach house and was searching for vintage inspired pieces to add character to his home. He wanted pieces with a unique retro feel but could function as efficiently as most modern appliances. With this idea in mind, he brainstormed with his nephew Orion Creamer who at that time had just graduated from product design school. Growing up, Orion spent his formative years antiquing and turning his finds into art installations. It was his unique knowledge of period pieces combined with product development skill that made him the ideal partner in the creation of what was to become the signature retro fridges from Big Chill.

The first prototype by Orion was built with metal and included stainless steel trims and pivoting handle reminiscent of kitchen appliances from the 50s. This design was soon executed in other bright colors that were dominant of the retro era. Think pink Cadillac or light blue Pontiac. And because they were so different from the usual streamlined modern kitchen accessories found in the market today, Big Chill pieces became style statements for design driven spaces.

In celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the Boulder-based company is donating 20% of proceeds to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every purchase of Pink Lemonade colored appliances. It is opportunity to finally add a statement piece to the heart of your home—and help make a difference in the lives of those suffering from cancer.
