Lake House restaurant in Lakewood offers family meals with view of Lake Erie

LAKEWOOD, Ohio – Lake House is one of only a few Greater Cleveland restaurants with a view of Lake Erie. But I had never heard of it until a Google search for waterfront restaurants. Neither had anyone I mentioned it to.

See cleveland.com’s sister website, RocktheLake.com, for more waterfront dining options.

Lake House is a bright, tiny spot with a family feel, fewer than 20 tables and vinyl booths squeezed at the back of the Lake House apartment tower on Edgewater Drive. The kind of place with regulars, where a neon sign winks at you and you pay at the register. The kind that had a line of customers waiting for the doors to open on a recent Sunday morning.

So while Lake House doesn’t have the panache, or quite the expansive view of downtown boasted by nearby Pier W, it is a great option for a lakefront meal with your family. Plus, it has a patio!

The Lake House, which opened in 2007, boasts locally sourced vegetables and big portions of home-style cooking. The breakfast menu includes gyro and corned beef omelets and skillets, plus your basic breakfast diner offerings – served all day. (After 11:30 a.m., breakfast costs $1 extra.) There are lots of sandwiches and wraps, and entrees, including fresh fried Lake Erie perch ($17.99) and a lobster shrimp combo ($18.99), are available for lunch and dinner. (Just know the restaurant is closed between 2:30 and 5 p.m. ) Wine and bottles of beer are also available.

Oh, and there’s no kids menu – or kids’ plastic cups. Which was fine for my 5- and 7-year-old, who were super impressed with the adult-sized pop. “This is the perfect size of Sprite,” my son said more than once.

The service was solicitous, and the food was tasty and fresh.

Our eggs, bacon and potatoes were perfectly cooked, without being dry. And my son happily devoured his Belgian waffle.

The best part of the meal, though, was the changing blue of Lake Erie through the wall of windows.
