Local studio a haven for artists of all ages and experience

Located off of Third Street, The Purple Penguin Art Company stands in downtown Thibodaux as a haven for artists of all ages and experience levels.

The business offers walk-in art activities and weekly classes for beginners wheel-throwing pottery, glass-fusion, art classes for kids and more.

Stephanie Donaldson, who opened the studio in 2011, said her theory on teaching art was that artists are not an elite group.

“I feel like anyone can be an artist,” Donaldson said. “Yes, I have a master’s degree in art, but that doesn’t mean I’m a better artist than anyone else. My goal is to teach people that art can be a benefit to everyone. It’s not about being good at art, it’s about using art as a therapy, as an outlet, just as something to do.”

Although the classes require pre-registration, they don’t carry a time commitment, according to Donaldson, and people can participate in as many or few classes as they would like.

The studio also offers several walk-in activities, such as canvas painting, where customers need only pay $20 for a blank canvas, pencils, paint and brushes to create their masterpiece at the studio.

A popular option is the Paint-Your-Own-Pottery. The studio has over 200 pieces of pottery to choose from, varying from dinnerware to children’s figures to religious symbols, and all painting supplies are available at the shop for use. Once you’ve finished painting your piece, the staff cleans up, clear coats and fires the piece in ceramic kiln in the back of the studio, which makes the piece food-safe, dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe. Prices vary per piece.

“It’s not about being good at art — it’s about finding yourself through it and it’s really fun,” Donaldson said. “You learn a lot about yourself, and you can learn a lot about the people around you just by doing art with them.”
