Mother’s Pancake house treats guests like family

Hasna Solmin is the namesake behind Mother’s Pancake House in St. Charles and Aurora.

“I tell everybody I’m the mother and I like to feed my kids all the time,” said the mother of three teenagers. Of course, in this instance the kids are her customers and they can choose breakfast or lunch comfort foods from the extensive menu.

Solmin came from Egypt 17 years ago and taught belly dancing and owned a hair and jewelry shop. She knew very little English, but saved up money to buy the two restaurants: “I know how to cook very good, too.”

She points to the homemade chicken noodle soup, chicken rice soup, lentil soup, skirt steak and eggs breakfast, and the Greek skillet. “It’s healthy,” she said of the Greek skillet with gyros meat, feta, green peppers, onions and tomatoes. “We have big portions and we add more stuff to the menu every year,” she said.
