On the market: Once home to artist, house showcases the art of living

Wakeman Road in the Greens Farms section neighborhood could easily be overlooked. Only a small street sign marks the entrance to the street from Hillandale Road.

It’s worth the trip down this cul-de-sac for the Contemporary Colonial house that sits at the end of it at 10 Wakeman Road. The house is infused with creative energy. The original owner, Disney artist Eric Gurney, created his award-winning artwork in that space. Back then, Gurney’s next-door neighbor was Tom Armstrong, another Disney artist.

Built in 1953, the house underwent updating in 2000 when an addition was also constructed giving the house 5,200 square feet of living space including 12 rooms, five bedrooms and two fireplaces.

The property encompasses 2.13 acres, and a prospective buyer can purchase the house and land in its current state. However, other options are available because the owners received permission last spring from zoning officials to divide the property into two parcels. The other options are to purchase a one-acre parcel with the existing house, or purchase a 1.13-acre parcel and build a house on that land.

The gray clapboard house has vertical siding and a large wood porch at the entrance that is really more like a deck. Its configuration gives the porch the sensation of being open arms ready to offer a welcoming embrace to its next owners. The porch is embraced by mature hydrangea bushes with blue flowers.

Inside, the foyer runs from the front to the back of the house and has ceramic tile flooring and a sliding door to the rear, raised wood deck. Off the foyer is an office with a wall of built-in bookshelves. This area of the house has two half baths, which is a great feature for entertaining. In the original wing of the house there is a large formal living room with the first of two fireplaces, a first floor master bedroom suite, and a sunken office or art studio, where Gurney likely created his art. He had an inspiring view across the front lawn and gardens.

The living room has two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the rear yard and sliders to the same deck that can be accessed from the foyer.

Much of the house has hardwood flooring, including the master bedroom although it is covered in wall-to-wall carpeting. It also has two porthole windows, a wall of built-in bookshelves, a walk-in closet and master bath.

The new wing of the house includes the gourmet kitchen, which is open to the family room, and the formal dining room, which has a bay window. Kitchen features include granite counters, a center island with a rounded granite counter and a breakfast bar that accommodates three. Appliances include two dishwashers — one Bosch and one KitchenAid — plus two Dacor ovens — one convection and one regular — as well as a Viking range top and GE Monogram refrigerator. A door between the kitchen and family room leads to a third deck.

The lower level has ceramic tile flooring except in the exercise room, which has carpeting, and the bedroom, which has a hardwood floor. There is also a media room, or lower-level family room, with a fireplace and walk-in closet. This level has two full baths flanking a laundry room with a sink and shelving. There is also a sliding door to the backyard. The exercise room is often flooded with natural light through its 18 casement windows.

On the second floor there is a loft area that is large enough to create a computer or homework room. There are three more bedrooms on this floor, one of which is en suite, and then there is a full bath accessed through the hallway.
