Opportunity to learn about vegetarian cooking next month

Oil City — Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peas, onions, corn — these are a few of the vegetables most people will find on their plates at dinner time. For some, that is all they want to eat.

A growing trend in vegetarian meals has definitely caught the fancy of health-conscious people around the world. Almost every grocery store now offers a section of frozen meat substitutes.

Seventh-Day Adventist Church, in Oil City, is offering a course in vegetarian and vegan cooking — “The Vegetarian Advantage.”

Kimberly Bennett will be one of the chefs helping with the pots, pans and ingredients.

Bennett explained the concept: “The Seventh-Day Adventist Church has a strong health message. With years of combined experience, we felt there may be an unmet need in the community that we could help address.”

Participants in the class will be exposed to a double dish of information, according to Bennett.

“The classes will provide medical information as to why following a vegetarian or vegan diet will help bring about better health. Recipes will include meat substitutions, such as mock meat loaf and meatballs. Traditional dishes will be presented with healthy alternative ingredients, such as vegan mac-n-cheese.”

Classes have been planned at the church for May 11-13, from 6 to 8 p.m., with an additional session offered May 17, at 3 p.m.

Hoping for success, Bennett is looking beyond the initial class sessions.

“We are very excited to share healthy living information with the community, and see where this venture will lead. We can adjust material to meet community interest as we move forward.”

Reservations for the classes must be made by May 1. Additional information is available by calling 676-6479.
