Presbyterian Women gearing up Christmas Tree Lane, Vero Beach’s oldest holiday bazaar, on Dec. 1

In 1954, the Presbyterian Women of the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach decided to hold a Christmas bazaar to benefit area charities.

Dubbed “Kitchen Korner,” the modest affair was held in what is now the Heritage Center.  A homey atmosphere was created by baking bread in a side room during the sale.  Sometime after the church buildings were completed, the newly housed bazaar became Christmas Tree Lane, which has become known as Vero Beach’s grandest holiday bazaar and cookie sale.

Christmas Tree Lane’s 64th season will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the church’s Christian Life Center, 520 Royal Palm Blvd.  Admission is free and parking ample.

Festively decked out with lighted Christmas trees, the Christian Life Center will open to gala holiday boutiques filled with countless gift ideas and stocking stuffers, endless bargains and a delicious bounty of homemade cookies and other mouth-watering goodies at Cookies-by-the-Pound and Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen.  Come early for the widest selection!

The immensely popular Unique Boutique, offering gently-used and new items, has doubled in size and will stretch out over the center’s upper floor.  In addition to a Christmas/holiday room, another room will be devoted to jewelry, scarves and designer clothes and shoes, while a third will offer kitchen items, accessories, books and sports gear, all at “Santa-approved” prices.

The Artisans’ Gallery – a favorite place for finding that uncommon gift – will feature more talented local artists than ever, offering such original items as handcrafted jewelry, pet art, scented soy candles, handcrafted soaps, painted glassware, personalized Christmas ornaments as well as decorations for all major holidays, and exquisite hand-painted tiles, scarves, and note cards. Sandy Reinoso of Kaleidoscope Hair will be on hand to add glittering Fairy Hair to ladies’ locks.

The church’s Quilting, Sewing Crafts ladies have created a host of beautiful handcrafts, from colorful beach and wine-bottle bags to hostess aprons.  The not-to-be-missed raffle area in the main entry will display two handmade quilts and a stunning Afghan created by these ladies, along with a $500 gift card tree for the lucky winners.

Last year, Christmas Tree Lane raised nearly $14,000 for area charities supported by the Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church.  Among those were Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach, United Against Poverty, Happy Feet, Kids Closet Charities, The Arc, The Buggy Bunch, Healthy Start Coalition, Lifeboat Project, Feed the Lambs, Literacy Services of Indian River County, Education Foundation of Indian River County, Shining Light Garden Foundation, and Friends After Diagnosis.  The group also contributed to the Vero Beach High School orchestra’s trip to Austria.

First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach is at the intersection of Royal Palm Boulevard and Indian River Boulevard.
