Relay for Life fundraising in Marion County tops $20000

MARION – Fundraising for the 2017 Relay for Life of Marion County has kicked into high gear.

The local event, which supports the American Cancer Society, is scheduled for June 16 at River Valley High School. The relay begins at 7 p.m. with a lap to honor survivors followed a lap honoring caregivers. A luminaria ceremony to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer is also part of the evening’s activities.

“We have 23 teams this year,” said chairperson Staci Bond. “We always have teams that join in at the last minute, too.”

As of May 5, those 23 teams have raised $20,074.14, according to the Marion County page on the Relay for Life website. The goal is $60,359.

“We’re ahead of where we were at this time last year,” Bond said. “That doesn’t include the teams that are doing fundraising throughout May.”

In fact, several groups have projects planned this month to generate dollars for Relay for Life. Bark for Life is set for Saturday at Pleasant Township Park. The event that honors the contributions of canine caregivers begins with registration at 11 a.m. The walk starts at noon. Bark for Life is scheduled to wrap up at 4 p.m.

It is sponsored by the Marion Community Credit Union team, which is the top fundraiser to this point in the campaign. Team members have raised $5,877 as of May 5, according to the Relay for Life website.

Also on Saturday, Sansotta’s Italian is hosting an all-day fundraiser on behalf of the JerZee Drive-in team.

“We are thankful for all of the restaurants that will do that,” Bond said.

The Miracles for Mary team is holding a bake sale May 21 at Walmart. It begins at 9 a.m. That team has raised $1,513 so far.

Relay for Life committee member Tammy Alexander said mini relays will be held May 19 at River Valley Middle School, Liberty Elementary School and Heritage Elementary School. Elgin Elementary School has a mini relay planned for May 22.

Luminaries to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives to cancer can be purchased through the Relay for Life of Marion County website. The deadline to purchase them is June 12. The luminaries will be displayed around the track at River Valley during the relay on June 16.

Raffles are being held in support of the relay. Whirlpool has donated a KitchenAid mixer and the Marion Country Club has donated passes good for four rounds of golf. Tickets are available for $10 each. For information, contact Bond at 740-361-7352.
