Senior PGA Championship director, tournament trophy visit NewsCenter 16 at Noon – WNDU

The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship kicks off later this month at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor later this month.

On Wednesday, Senior PGA Championship director Ryan Ogle spoke about the event with Joshua Short on NewsCenter 16 at Noon, and he brought another special guest to the interview—the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy.

The Alfred S. Bourne Trophy, one of the largest in golf, is a hefty 36 pounds. It measures 18 inches wide and stands 42 inches. “Our champion gets to hoist this and be crowned the KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion,” Ogle says.

Harbor Shores has been home to the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship every two years since 2012. For this year, Ogle says they’ve raised the bar. “You’re going to see some great golf yet again,” he says. “We’ve got some new faces out there.”

This year’s field of golfers include popular names like Vijay Singh, David Toms, and Miguel Ángel Jiménez. It also includes the 2016 defending champion Rocco Mediate and former champions Colin Montgomerie (2014) and Roger Chapman (2012).

Although the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship is a big event for golf fans, Ogle says they are also trying to attract non-golfers and families. “We’ve added more and more things to do for everyone,” he says. “[The event] is six days long, and all six days juniors ages 17 and under are free to our championship, so all families can come and enjoy.”

The championship is not only big for local fans. It also has a huge impact on Michiana in terms of television exposure and financial gain. “We partner with Michigan Economic Development Corporation post-2016, and they attributed our championship to a $14 million impact to the local region and state.”

The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship begins on May 22 and runs through May 27. For ticketing information, you can visit srpga.com. You can also call 800-PGA-GOLF.
