Southern Baked Pie Company Offers a Pie for Every Palate

With three locations in the Atlanta area, as well as online ordering options to ship anywhere in America, getting your eager hands on a Southern Baked specialty is as easy as … well … pie.

Stepping through the door at Buckhead’s Southern Baked Pie Company is a bit like stepping into your grandmother’s kitchen. Not only are you immediately greeted by a friendly face and a “Welcome to Southern Baked Pie,” but your senses are instantaneously awakened. With your nose, you smell the wafting scents of freshly baked dough. With your eyes, you see rows upon rows of pies, both large and small. With your ears, you hear the beeping oven timer signaling a new batch is done. At this point, there’s a good chance your mouth starts watering as your taste buds gear-up for what’s to come.

Besides pie, visitors will find other baking accessories including aprons, t-shirts, cake plates and kitchen utensils.

Owner Amanda Wilbanks started her venture by baking and selling pies out of her home. She recalls when her idea really took off. “My husband signed me up for a local festival on a Tuesday, and by Friday I had created business cards, a logo and conceptualized my entire company. I sold slices of pie at the festival for $4 each and sold out the first day. I went home and baked all through the night, went back the next day, and sold out again.” With the reassurance that her pies were not only desirable but delicious, Amanda had the confidence to turn her baking side hustle into a full-time career. “After baking out of my house from October to December 2012 and selling a little over 500 pies out of my tiny kitchen, I decided it was time to lease a retail space,” Amanda says. Today, Amanda’s pies ship nationwide and are sold at some of the country’s most prestigious restaurants and shops including Dean Deluca, Cafe Intermezzo, Swan Coach House and Garden Gun Mercantile + Co.

Her only ITP (‘Inside The I-285 Perimeter’ for our non-Atlanta readers) store, located on iconic Peachtree in the heart of Buckhead, is a community treat. “The Buckhead neighborhood reminds me a lot of Gainesville,” Amanda explains. “The people are friendly; they still value Southern traditions, and they graciously support small business owners. The art of giving gifts or taking someone a homemade dinner is still very much alive in Buckhead.” Gifting someone a homemade dinner or dessert is exactly what makes Southern Baked Pie such a valuable part of the neighborhood. On each visit, without fail, someone is in the store picking up a savory chicken pot pie for a new mom or a caramel pecan pie for a business colleague.

Pies are also available in individual servings, which make great personal treats.

Cherry pie is a fan favorite and comes in a full size, small size and a hand pie version.

Dessert connoisseurs will love Southern Baked Pie’s quintessential flavors like pumpkin, apple, chocolate chess, peanut butter and cherry, but the bakery’s savory pies like taco and beef stroganoff are also not to be missed. If you have a baby or wedding shower coming up, Southern Baked Pie even offers quiches. There is truly something for every palate and occasion. Amanda’s personal favorite? “Chocolate chess pie with a scoop of High Road Craft ice cream. You can’t ever go wrong with chocolate.”

Amanda’s pie passion is evident, and the fresh ingredients that go into the pies make them even more special. “We take the time to hand-roll each dough and finish off by hand pleating each individual shell to perfection. We do not use anything out of a can. Everything is made from scratch using simple, local, Georgia-grown ingredients,” Amanda explains.

“We wanted to work with companies that have the same attention to detail and produce high-quality, unique products. There is no better coffee and ice cream in our mind,” Amanda says of Jittery Joe’s and High Road Craft.

With three successful locations along with shipping pies across state lines, there’s no slowing down for Southern Baked Pie. Amanda is busy working on her first book, Celebrate Life with Pie, and is even considering franchising. Ultimately, however, it’s not the potential franchises, book deals or restaurants in her repertoire that keep her smiling. When asked why she chose to open a bakery, Amanda’s reply is simple: “Because it reminds me of home. When people come into a bakery, they are happy. Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh-baked pastries?! I feel like I get to share my talents plus make people’s lives a little easier by supplying them with a quality product that tastes as beautiful as it looks.” And for that, we are grateful to you, Amanda.
