Stuck in neutral? Shift gears

As much as neutral interiors will always be in style and are still a favorite of mine, more colorful room schemes seems to be trending.

Just notice the shelter magazines, House Beautiful, Design New England and New England Home, to mention a few. Their covers always feature a room with color.

Not all rooms have to be saturated with color. White kitchens and bathrooms are still on my list as having a clean look and adding the most light to the space. Adding color to a kitchen can be done through pictures on the wall and colored appliances. However, for a quicker and easier change of color, I choose fresh flowers in our white kitchen.

Golden yellow sunflowers will add some happiness and a pop of sunshine to a white kitchen.

Cut lilacs add a romantic softness and beautiful fragrance to any space.

When adding color to a living area, toss the idea of the matchy-matchy tables. Mix it up. Add color through an accent piece of furniture. A console table can be chosen as a statement piece.

Check out the Century Furniture showroom at the Boston Design Center. Its new Details program allows you to build your own accent piece. The process begins with selecting your case — the box of the piece, if you will. Select your drawer or door style, leg or foot base style and, finally the “details” of the hardware. Choosing the hardware style and finish on the drawers or doors of the piece makes a statement and makes it your own — and is totally custom, especially when choosing from a multitude of stain or paint finishes.

Another way to add color into your neutral spaces is through table lamps. Again, I recently at Century Furniture a pair of hot-pink table lamps, with a gold base and white lamp shade. The contrast of white lamp shades and the pink lamp added an updated pop of color to the fretwork front sideboard featured in the showroom in a dark stain.

Accessories can add more color than expected in a room with a neutral color.

On the flip side, neutral doesn’t have to mean only white, creams, beiges and grays.

A room with dark pieces of furniture can be lightened with color by trying the opposite: Use neutral accessories to add color to a dark space.

Dark end tables and consoles can have color by adding whites and bright items. Books, magazines and live plants with greenery add life to a space whether dark or neutral.

There are many ways to change up the look of a space through color accessories without breaking the bank. One is to start in your own backyard with fresh flowers.
