The Insider Pick:

  • A high-quality casserole dish can handle the heat of the oven without being damaged, has large handles for easy maneuverability, and cooks meals evenly without burning. The Arcuisine Glass Rectangular Roaster Pan is our top pick because it’s made of durable borosilicate glass, bakes excellent casseroles, and comes with a five-year warranty.

If you like roasted vegetables, enchiladas, baked macaroni and cheese, lasagna, or casseroles of any variety, a good baking dish is an indispensable part of your cookware collection. Also referred to as casserole dishes and roasting pans, baking dishes come in a broad array of shapes, sizes, and materials.

For the purposes of this guide, we are going to focus on rectangular dishes that are roughly the standard 13 by 9 inches (give or take an inch or two). We are also only going to cover glass and ceramic models since they have slow heat distribution, which is best for cooking popular casserole ingredients, like pasta, cheese, and eggs.

The downside of glass and ceramic is that they are both susceptible to thermal shock. Thermal shock occurs when parts of a dish expand or contract at different rates when coming in contact with a hot or cold surface. This difference in expansion can lead to shattering. Glass is more susceptible to thermal shock than porcelain and other ceramics.

There are steps you can take to avoid thermal shock. Never put an empty dish in a heated oven. Also, if you have a meal frozen in a baking dish, let it sit on your counter for a while before popping it in the oven. It may also be helpful to place your baking dish on a towel once you take it out of the oven rather than putting it directly on a cold counter.

We also want to note that in our research the manufacturer-advertised dimensions of the dishes were almost always larger than the dish actually is. In the instances when the dimensions were accurate, the measurements typically referred to how large the dish was at the rim — the largest part. In our guide, we provide the most accurate measurements we could find.

While researching the best baking dishes, we examined hundreds of expert and buyer ratings and reviews of dozens of pans. The baking dishes included in our guide are easy to clean, designed to last, and they produce excellently baked, roasted, and sometimes broiled foods.
