The Cutest Place To Stay In Ojai Is Clearly This Airstream Hotel

Caravan Outpost

Caravan Outpost in Ojai, California.

Ojai, the no-chains-allowed, spiritualbut not in a weird hippy waybohemian California city set in the valley against the Topatopa Mountains has one more reason it’s drawing in travelers, and it’s not the electromagnetic vortex that I’m talking about.

I’m talking about Caravan Outpost.

Imagine this: checking in means you’re handed keys to your very own Airstream. You spend a few minutes exploring your new, super quaint abode only to step outside just in time to take in the valley’s famous Pink Momentwhen the sky blankets the city in an incredible shade of pink. Not too far away, a fire crackles in the distance with someone playing their acoustic guitar as the sun sets. Couples have claimed the oversized outdoor loungers to share some outdoor privacy, while still taking in the scene as they sip on wine. That’s the energy here. You won’t be able to quite put your finger on it, but there’s something about Caravan Outpost, and Ojai in general, that just feels right.

And that’s exactly why Caravan Outpost, an all Airstream, all the time adventure hotel is making a name for itself in this tiny eclectic town.

The Caravan Outpost lot from above.

With 11 Airstreams on site, each with their own name (I stayed in Sam, a gorgeous 30 foot trailer that easily fit two people), and all of the amenities you could wantgreat Pendleton wool blankets, Southwest inspired rugs and décor, a record player complete with an amazing selection of records, a kitchenette complete with plates, utensils, and cookware, a bathroom and tiny shower, and most important for this area, where hot, dry summers are the norm, air conditioning.

And whatever isn’t in your Airstream, chances are that you’ll find it in the general store. From a gorgeous collection of cast iron skillets that they couldn’t be more excited for you to use over the community fire that they build nightly, to morning coffee and a place to buy coconut water and anything else you might need for a morning after exploring Ojai haze, it’s all here. Plus, there are full size showers and bathrooms just around the corner, because no matter how cute Airstreams are, their showers are really, really tiny.

If you couldn’t tell already, Caravan Outpost gets this whole experiential travel thing. They host live music on a monthly basis, they do large format 100-person dinner parties, they have a pop up movie theater, they do “Tone and Tonic” yoga, and that’s just them getting into the swing of things. Because knowing these guys, there are plenty more experiences to come.

And the crowd here is just as cool. From families who are no strangers to outdoor adventures traveling up from Los Angeles for a long weekend away, to road trip honeymooners in the tech industry from San Franciscoit goes without saying, but if they’re staying here, they’re probably people you want to meet.

When you’re ready to finally make your way into Ojai, which isn’t far from where the Outpost is located, just tucked back away from the town’s main drag, there are plenty of bikes (and a bike trail behind the Outpost) to help you get there. Explore the shopsFig Curated Living is a mustgrab an Ojai Valley Brew and a bite at Azu, pack an afternoon picnic and spend a few hours at Topa Mountain Winery, hit up the Sunday morning farmer’s market, or just take advantage of Ojai’s relaxed and reinvigorating energy.

Because no matter what you do, there’s almost no going wrong here.
