The Décor Magic Is in the Details: 5 design trends for 2018 – TwinCities.com

We all want to live in a home that reflects our personality and lifestyle. Just knowing how to achieve that goal can be overwhelming. To get you started, we’ve compiled five of the hottest design trends to incorporate into your home. After all, the magic is in the details.

Plants and Natural Accents

House plants have come back in style with a force. Fortunately, you don‘t need a full blown greenhouse to bring nature into your home. Group lush green plants in pots and baskets of various sizes and textures in the bathroom, kitchen or even around the fireplace. Don’t have a green thumb? Bring nature into your home with paint in shades of green. Look for towels, dishes and accessories with bold tropical prints in shades of green. Or create your own island haven with botanical print bedding, pillows and window curtains. Play up the natural vibe with faux wooden blinds or shutters.

Metallic Finishes

Luxe metallic finishes are everywhere. Shimmer and shine are even showing up in unexpected places like wallpaper and carpeting. Add a bit of glam to any room with rose gold and copper accents. Choose a lamp base, legs on a cabinet or frame a mirror in these warm finishes. Add copper to the kitchen with cooking and decorative accessories such as measuring cups, copper bottom pots, utensils or a tea kettle. Look for drapery hardware in a metallic finish as a refreshing change from wood.

Geometry

Geometric patterns — everything from simple motifs to bold and colorful patterns — add drama to any space. Create a focal wall with wallpaper in a large-scale design in bright colors, or make a huge statement by painting a bold geometric pattern on your floor or ceiling. On a smaller scale, consider installing a kitchen backsplash or shower stall with graphic hand-painted tiles or hang curtains or shades in a geometric print.

Fringe

Fashion trends often carry over into interior design, and fringe is one of those fads that’s hot right now. Add fringe to a lamp shade or chandelier or hang a boho macramé wall hanging with a fringed edge. Fringed accessories like pillows, throws, draperies and cushions are other easy updates.

Color

Color is one to the most powerful tools in your design arsenal. It can change or alter the mood of the space and bold colors are on the upswing. Bringing color into a room is more than just painting the walls. Create a calm bedroom with neutral walls, but add bedding and draperies in a color that speaks to you. Pillows and area rugs can also bring an instant splash of color to the living room. If you want something bolder, consider using Pantone’s color of the year, Ultra Violet (a warm shade of purple). Use it on an accent wall or incorporate it into accents that you can swap out again next year.
