Two arrested for stabbing death of Springfield teen – News – The … – The State Journal

Two people have been arrested and a third person is wanted in connection with the death of 19-year-old Dohndre Hughes on Friday, Springfield police said.

Dayne A. Woods, 20, of the 500 block of South Douglas Avenue in Springfield and Katherine E. Smith, 18, of Chatham were arrested Tuesday.

A third suspect, Mark D. Meszaros, 20, of Drawbridge Road in Springfield has not yet been located and is believed to have fled the area, police said.

All three face possible charges of first degree murder, home invasion and armed robbery.

Hughes was pronounced dead at HSHS St. John’s Hospital at 1:02 a.m. Friday, about 30 minutes after Springfield police responded to a report of a home invasion in the 1900 block of East Jackson Street and found Hughes in the house suffering from an injury.

Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards said Wednesday that Hughes died of a single stab wound to the chest. Police declined to discuss any further details of the case until Meszaros is arrested.

Woods and Smith are being held at the Sangamon County Jail on $2 million bond. An arrest warrant has been issued for the arrest of Meszaros, also with a bond of $2 million.

Walker Funeral Service in Springfield is handling arrangements. Donations can be made in Hughes’ name at CEFCU bank, according to his obituary.

“(Hughes) had a smile that could brighten anyone’s day and a laugh that was truly infectious,” his obituary stated. “He never met a stranger that did not later on become his friend; he was the true definition of a people person.

“Dre loved spending time with his family playing cards, cooking meals and burning skillets. If he was not in a kitchen he was on a basketball court playing the game he loved most.”
