Visit Pondicherry: The ultimate confluence of French and Indian colony life

SERENITY SIMPLIFIED Region: Puducherry (Pondicherry)

About 100km away from the capital city of Tamil Nadu in Chennai is Pondicherry which underlines serenity in every sense. Pondicherry is affectionately known as ‘Pondy’ and officially Puducherry. Most of the people come up with frequent words like ‘Auroville’, ‘French Colony’, ‘Aurobindo Ashram’ and of course ‘the beach’. Pondicherry has some absolutely stunning beaches, including Promenade or Rock beach, Serenity beach, Veerambatinam and Paradise beach, just to list a few.

A good idea is to go environment-friendly and explore the city on a bicycle. The bicycle tour is headed by a tour guide; you can take this tour single too. After a quick meal at a cozy Italian restaurant, look forward to heading to Aurobindo Ashram, which is known as the Universal Town.

A huge globe made of golden plates greets visitors which symbolises Mother Earth. It is a serene, beautiful, peaceful, prosperous and glorifying experience.

At the Bussy Street, visit the Sacred Heart church; if possible try to be a part of mass prayers.

Further, the lanes will lead to Hazarath Syed Ahamed Mowla Sahib Dargah Sharif–an old mosque which is open all days but open for women only on Thursdays.

Take a visit to the huge Gourbet market having almost 200 shops displaying their specialties–be it garlands for wedding or for the temple offerings, vegetables, the kitchen accessories and a big space with an array of stalls selling wide range of fresh fish straight from the sea.

Apart from the shopping destinations in M.G Street, one can enjoy the Sunday Bazaar. Both sides of the road opposite the clock tower are filled by the shopkeepers and locals. Also, make a visit to the Kanaga Chetti Kulam Beach. The beach is an example of serenity.
