What it takes to make the perfect gourmet grilled cheese sandwich – WISH

With spring dragging its feet, there’s no better time to indulge in a comfort food like grilled cheese!

Today on Indy Style, the crew from Carmel Market District shows us several ooey-gooey grilled cheese sandwiches, including tips for the perfect grilled cheese sandwich (types of breads and cheeses, amount of butter, mayo or no mayo, perfect soup for dipping, etc.)

We also learn how to spice up your grill cheese experience with meats, veggies, spreads, and other fixings. Market District crew members say for some people cheese can seem as addictive as chocolate, especially when it’s melted. So, all next week, Hoosiers can fulfill that common craving with the chefs’ mouthwatering takes on a classic favorite, including:

What it takes to make the perfect…

The only thing that could make a grilled cheese better is to add a little bacon, and that’s exactly what we’ve done with this recipe. Treat yourself to this all-American classic grilled sandwich along with a bowl of tomato soup or your favorite slaw, and you can’t go wrong.

·         8 slices multi-grain or firm white sandwich bread
·         2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, softened
·         8 slices American Cheese and Sliced Cheddar or Colby Cheese
·         6 to 8 slices crisply cooked bacon, halved
·         4 slices large tomato
·         2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard or spicy brown mustard (optional)

1.      Heat a large griddle or two large nonstick skillets over medium-low heat. Spread butter evenly over one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices bread, buttered side down, on griddle or in skillets.
2.      Layer 4 slices cheese, bacon, tomato slices and remaining 4 slices cheese over bread; top with remaining bread, buttered side up. Cook 3 minutes per side or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
3.      Cut sandwiches diagonally into halves; serve with mustard for dipping, if desired.
