White Bull Tavern Opens Downtown With a Raw Bar and Wood-Fired Pizza

Downtown Boston has a new dining spot that pays homage to the history of the city and sits right by Faneuil Hall. White Bull Tavern has officially opened at 1 Union St., serving pizzas, skillet-cooked appetizers, and more.

White Bull Tavern, located in Boston’s historic Blackstone Block, is named for a tale about William Blackstone, a European settler who rode a white bull named Jupiter into the city in the 1600s.

“William Blackstone was a pioneer, a man of many trades and talents, and a legend in his own right. We took that inspiration and turned it into a new concept that is a modern-day meeting place,” said owner Jeff Baird in a release, promising “something for everyone” at the restaurant, from mid-day snacking to late-night dining.

The restaurant has a raw bar with eight seats, serving a selection of oysters that changes daily. Appetizers, which are served in cast-iron skillets, include lollipop lamb chops, meatballs, roasted Brussels sprouts, and pan-seared scallops. The main menu features several pizzas, including a particularly meaty one topped with pepperoni, prosciutto, and salami. In addition to pre-set pizzas, there are customizations available, along with sandwiches and salads. Entrees rotate weekly.

To drink, there are 24 beers on draft and cocktails served in non-traditional vessels, like antique tea cups and champagne buckets.

The restaurant spans nearly 8,000 square feet of space across two floors, seating 180 people. Design elements are courtesy of At Absolute Zero Design as well as antiquing efforts from owner Jeff Baird and his wife, Alissa, and there is a portrait of William Blackstone displayed prominently on the first floor.

White Bull Tavern operates daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. In the coming months, the restaurant will debut late-night and weekend brunch menus.
